71 Zenith Fuel Pump Replacement
OK, I posted once before and received no answers, not sure but I don't imagine there are many out there with this problem....
My 1971 T with Zenith carbs has been down for about 3 weeks now due to fuel pump failure. I've searched and called everywhere but no fuel pump available for my car. and yes that includes our host who shows it available for $842.00. So I have to go an aftermarket fuel pump. Again, our host has a Facet type that is available but with one problem it doesn't have a return line on it, effectively it is only a replacement for a car with weber carbs which has only an in and out for the fuel. I have seen pressure regulators available with a return line on it, but I'm not sure exactly how that would work. Can I simple re-route the line from existing fuel pump up to the pressure regulator which would most likely be mounted in the engine compartment? Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. KevinS

Kevin -
I don't know the exact specs on the fuel pump (they must be on the board somewhere), but I think all you really care about is the output pressure, flow rate capacity and electrical draw limits. The MFI cars need a return, but not the carbs. I think the Bosch pump used recirculating fuel to cool the pump, so that would be why there is a return. If the Facet pump has the correct output for Webers, I wouldn't hesitate to give it a try. At the San Diego Porsche Parade a year ago Porsche was making a big deal out of their new "Classic Porsche" program. They were touting it as support for older Porsches and the rep made it clear to me that they intended to make parts available. Right. If I can free up some time I'll try to dig out the flyer they were handing out and post it here so we can all show our "appreciation". Jim

I'd like to thank those of you that replied to my post.
I found a fuel pump on ebay for $410. I had it replaced and it seems to be working, at least the car runs. It is however the car is not running well, not sure what it is, will try a tune up and see what happens. Thanks, KevinS

Kevin,
Wish I found this thread earlier. I went through a fuel pump replacement a few years ago on my 72T with Zenith carbs. As mentioned above, only MFI systems need a return to the fuel tank, not carbureted systems - carb pumps just have in and out. There are several aftermarket fuel pump solutions available at very reasonable prices. ($800 for an OEM one is NOT reasonable, IMO!) When I couldn't get mine to stop leaking and tried several replacement pumps, I gave up and took it into the shop (this was my first ever DIY project, and I didn't feel confident with leaking gas in the garage!). They replaced it with an aftermarket pump, rerouted the plumbing and electrical wiring to the front suspension pan (where Porsche themselves moved it to in 1973 or 74) and mounted it up there. The total bill for parts and labour was about $200.

Kevin, I'm glad that Ebay pump worked out well for you. With all the negative posts about, "evilbay", some positive feedback relating your satisfactory experience would have been nice.

Fuel Pump
Don't suppose you might still have the fuel pump for the 72 911T?
