964 3.6 misfire, cutting out

I have a 1991 3.6 in a 1980 911. I have been chasing a cut out ,misfire condition for quite some time. Today I spent some more time on it and ran on one dist or the other alternately. When the primary dist alone is connected the engine runs cleanly. when on the secondary(driven) dist. the engine misfires and backfires and cuts out. The belt is at least working but is old and a little loose. I think the ECM is rebooting causing the cut out . Do I have bad wires? All plugs, caps and rotors were changed as routine not long ago.
