Fuchs Center Cap Question

I have an 87 911 with 16 inch Fuchs wheel and black center caps.

Two of the caps have a pair of holes in them and the other two have no holes.

Can someone explain which ones are correct and what the others may have come from?

Thanks.

the ones with the holes are for the porsche tool to remove the ( two curved wire ) that clip in and you then pull out
the other set either pops/snaps in , or the have three thru bolts that are tightend from the reverse side of the rim when the wheel is off

as far as original, i don't know for sure but i think the holes are the right one ?

The caps with holes are the stock units.

'splain me this, please.

The ones without the holes were earlier ones. Made before the tool was made to fit the ones with the holes.

Thank you. When did they make the transition to the newer style?

Here's a pic of the "tool". It made it easier to remove the cap while the wheel was still mounted on the car.

Without the tool, there are several common ways to remove the cap:
1) If not too tight, grab the edge of the center cap with your fingers and pry it off,
2) if that didn't work, use something flat , like a screwdriver, to bet between the center cap and the wheel - if not done carefully, this could leave a slight divot.
3) or remove the wheel and whack the back of the center cap with the hell of a wooden handled hammer - this last method was a bit more time consuming..

I believe holes in the center cap and the associated tool were designed to make removal of the center cap while the wheel was still mounted a bit easier and quicker. Unfortunately, if not used properly, the tool, when used to remove the center cap has a tendency to form a "scoop (i.e. round-out) the hole in the center cap.

You gotta love the Germans.

I too experienced this painful dilemma and drilled holes in the two without.

WoodyHFD,

I to have two caps with holes and two with out. If you are interested I will trade you two with holes for the two you have with out? PM me if you would like to make a trade.

My '81 came without the holes. Ones I bought later had the holes.

Should the caps on an 87 have holes or not?

the caps without holes make you car faster, without all that drag from the random air currents form all those holes....

Drill motor will fix it.....

An 87 had holes
No-holes ended around 82, they are slightly more valuable because if you polish a holed-cap or paint them a solid color other than black they look a little less clean.

Back what I said a week ago (with clarification): The ones with holes are stock (for an `87)

Thanks everyone.

This may be a stupid question, and I'm not questioning the accuracy of anyone's answers here, but if the wheels are off, can't you just push the caps off from the back side the wheel? And if the wheels aren't off, why would you want to remove the caps?

The only reason that comes to mind is that there are caster/camber gauges that mount on a machined flat wheel center surface, requiring that the cap be removed. Also, if you are using a straight edge from along the rim surface for checking your camber, then the center cap on a 6" wheel is in the way.
