While watching Le Mans the other night my wife was asking what car was what and I said can't you tell the Ferrari sounds totally different from the Porsche. After a while she could pick them out by sound.
That got me thinking about describing how my 74 sounds and after riding in my buddies 88 Carrera I could notice a definite difference. Mine makes a WHINING (nice) sound in lower gears and then proceeds to HOWL in higher gears and rpms. His 88 makes a GROWLING noise at lower gears and a ROARING noise at higher gears and rpms. It would be interesting to hear how the other vintages sound as I'm sure we have a wide variety here. ------------------ Dan S. 1974 911 Targa |

Hey Dave,
I also have a '74 and understand what you mean. I sure do love the different sounds. How about the nice deep exhaust sound when you accelerate in 3rd gear after your RPM's drop down to about 2000. The sound of an older 911 is unmistakable. I always turn my head when I hear one coming. One time I was fooled and the sound came from a Corvair! ------------------ |

How does my car sound? Listen to the sound track in the opening scene of Lemans...imagine the engine being just a bit bigger in displacement...that's it.
Now, how would you descibe a stock 996 sound?

PWd72S, I think a stock 996 sounds like a sewing machine being over rev'ed.

I agree that the 911 has a distinctive sound. Even the new ones. Watch a Speedvision GT series, Grand Am, Le Mans, etc, and listen to the 911 GT3s. They have a distinctive 911 sound, which I might add is very sweet!

From what I've seen & heard, the "wimpy" sewing machine sound of the 996 is largely due to (a) the stock exhaust system and (b) most poseur drivers never revving beyond 3000rpms. Change either of those and it certainly sounds like a real Porsche to me. From inside the car revving hard up thru 100mph it sounds quite 911-like as well.

Yes the 996 sounds *very* 911 when driven like one. Puttering around they don't really sound like anything. Flog one and they will definitely remind you that it's a 911. (If only they looked more like one)
As for mine, I LOVE the sound of my Webers at 6 grand resonating through the thin plastic rear window. Kinda gives the impression that if you got too close, you'd be sucked into the air filter. I love how the pitch changes right at the torque peak. My favorite thing to do is take it up to redline in fourth, back off and then punch it again, and again, and again. Never gets old. ------------------ Tyson Schmidt 72 911 Cabriolet 92 C-2 Cabriolet |
