Cool stuff to do to the Porsche

Well all this time I have had lately while aimlessly throwing money at my car has given me time to reflect and decide what else I want to aimlessly throw money at after the engine is done.

Here are a couple of my planned projects for the future:

After the engine is back together and running to my satisfaction I am going to hit the interior.
I spent a weekend with 4 yds of black vinyl and reupholstered the rear tray, quarter panels, and knee pads. When I find some suitable door panel material, they are next.
I will end up having to buy a domestic carpet kit ($200) and a set of fiberglass door pockets ($200). I will have to find a set of good 944/911/Konig/Corbeau seats to replace my sport seats.
That should spruce things up a bit on the inside.
One thing I have always wanted to do is add some guages I think the factory forgot.
I would like to install a voltmeter, cylinder head temp. gauge and one of those K&N Air/Fuel mixture gauges in one of those mounting brackes under the ashtray.
Anyone ever installed a Cylinder head temp unit or one of those K&N Mixture units?
Interested in hearing any stories.

You guys are going to LOVE the way thae Burlwood dash came out!

Really Noah? the sample I got from Autos International looked to be pretty good stuff. Just synthetic vs. wool. My car is a targa...it will never be impervious to water, and the car is a daily driver that gets alot of wear. Thats why I didn't want to drop $500 on a fancy wool carpet set.
Hmmmmm...And I really wish it would be cost effective to repair my sport seats. They kick so much ass. I love them to death but they are honestly hammered.
The leather is totally shot. One spot on the drivers side bolster is worn through the foam...I put duct tape on it to keep from scuffing it any more. That would have to be repaired before it could even be recovered, then there is a broken cable that I have heard is a pain in the butt to fix, and not to mention my brackets and hardware on the seats look old and beat up. For some reason the seats in my car were by far the most hammered components. Utterly trashed. Everything else shows wear...but not like the seats.
Maybe I'll check into it more...because I really love them...but I'm not going to spend an arm and a leg fixing them.

I recommend against domestic carpet too, at least the stuff sold by Automotion (sorry Wayne, bought it before I knew much about Pelican). The sample looked ok, but it looks kinda cheesy in the car. I really notice it on the back of the rear seats where its well lit and in full view.

How about World Upholstery domestic carpet? www.worlduph.com I got a sample of it and it looked pretty decent. The price was more too. Around $300 or $350 as I recall.

Noah, maybe it was Original fit that I got the sample from. I'll keep it in mind now.
You said you had one seat recovered for $600? Was that leather or vinyl? If it was vinyl then you can see my point. That would be $1200 plus the work required to fix the foam, cable, and refinish the recliner mechanisms. That will add up quick.
The seats that Performance Products sells "Cerullo GT" offer a nice looking seat in black vinyl for like $500 ea.

Anyone have any ideas about the gauges I am thinking of?

Thanks Noah, I was wondering if you had forgot but I am not one to annoy someone about free parts!

What I would like to do to mine is install head temp gagues. I know it sounds petty but I live in SW FL and it gets pretty hot down here. Is there a place that I can install, seperate from the dme, head temp gagues on the heads (1 per bank) and what gagues are recommended?

If your interested to keep the Sport Seats (although heavy) you can check out Leatherique.com

I have done that to one of my sport seats. The Leather turned out pretty good. I wish their color matching (Cashmere interior) was better. Oh-well I imagine, the colors will match better after a year or two of sweating on the refinished seat...

Have fun!

The factory carpeting in my car is just old. It's sunfaded on the backs of the rear seats, crushed and smells like old wool.
Plus I am going with all black and it is tan right now.

I should ask Tom Sharpes where he got his at. I think his carpet turned out pretty nice.

Does anyone have any info about mounting a head temp gauge or the Air/Fuel mixture monitor???

Leland:

Auto International treated me very well when I rebuilt my rear speaker deck. Also, I HIGHLY recommend wool in the car. This is a job you want to do once that will last forever. Wool lasts longer, and the wetness from leaks, etc. will do less damage to wool than it will do to a synthetic. I so well remember going a little cheap and getting a carpet set that was not quite up to the job.

Leland,
Get the good stuff. My carpet still looks very good...no noticeable wear after 27 years. Also, everything I have heard about Autos International has been good. They even have the blue black leather for my seats and they quoted around 1200 for a complete rebuild of cushions and recover.

I have a question for people. Has anyone thought of actually going with non-stock carpeting for the car. Buy carpet that is enough to do the interior and cut it to size yourself? I am contemplating getting carpeting that is similar to stuff that is in other cars...seems similar to house carpet but with thinner backing....seems to me it would be more comfortable and less expensive....and can be replaced with factory stuff if ever going to sell.

I would figure maybe $50 for stuff that lasts quite a while??

Leland, I am having a hard time picturing you as a German wool carpet type of guy.

I picture you more as an indoor-outdoor carpet kind of guy. Consider this:

Leland...
Take a look through the Pelican website tech articles. There is a d-i-y fuel/air monitor project there. Looks pretty simple (if it works).

Thumbs up

I just received the Leatherique products myself. I'm starting first on my BMW which is much less worn than the Porsche (14 years younger). Next I'll try the Porsche including the repair and re-dye. I took before pictures. If the repairs turn out well, I'll take some after photos and post both. I should receive the dye product next week for the Bimmer. So far, so good; the rejuvinator and cleaner worked better than anything that I've tried so far on both cars. The Porsche's driver side seat is cracked and this will be a true test of how well this stuff works. If it does, it will save a bundle. Question: If I must replace my seat, can just the bottom portion be replaced without replacing the backrest?

I would think less of you, Lee, if you didn't put a Jet on the back of that thing along with headlights that moved out of the way to reveal missiles on one side and a machine gun on the other.

I’ve got RS door panels courtesy of the PO and like ‘em just fine. I will admit that I have to reach over and pull the strap with my right hand (yep, I’m weak), but I doubt a guy would have a problem and its not real far anyway.

And its an added bonus when a passenger can’t figure out how to open the door.
