Engine stand
Given that I will separate the transmission from the engine before hoisting to an engine stand, will a 1000lb engine stand suffice or do I need to go higher?

A 1000 lbs engine stand will be plenty. You could even get away with a 750 lb stand. I believe that most engines are less than 500lbs or there about.

Thank you! That is good news as I may have found a 750lbs stand dirt cheap with local pickup.:)

You might want to consider a stand that has 2 front legs or bars that come out towards the engine.
It makes it easier to lift an engine onto the stand when you are alone or unable to physically lift an engine with the adapter on it. I use a jack that raises the engine all the way up to the level of the stand, having installed the adapter on the back, and can slide the adapter tube straight into the stand without assistance.
