Finished my fuel tank resto.

Check it out guys,

I had a leaking fuel tank with a rusted seam all the way around. So I wire brushed off the rubber (on my grinder), Por 15'ed the inside, primed the thing, and covered it in some stuff called "Blue Magic Pure Rubber Coating" (2 cans).

Blue Magic: http://bluemagicusa.com/index.php/blue_magic/products/108
Por 15 Kit: http://www.por15.com/FUEL-TANK-REPAIR-KIT/productinfo/FTRK/

It turned out nicely .

Very nice! Where did you get the foam strip and how did you glue it on? I have my tank in epoxy primer right now awaiting a coating of grey Wurth shutz...

Thanks for the positive feedback guys .

The foam strip is available on Pelican with a self-adhesive backing. Search for "fuel tank seal" in the parts section.

That grey Wurth Shutz should look very nice, OEM style.

Gary,
NAPA has a pickup truck bed cover foam gasket you can use. It has a glue strip which you just peel back to expose the glue.

Nice looking tank!

Did you do new schutz or just cover the old?

Doug

Nice job on the tank. Have you posted another thread about your car? I see it's at least partially stripped in the first photo - I'm curious about the process you used to get it down to bare metal. . .

I used a wire brush and an abrasive disk. Dewalt sells an attachment for abrasive disks for a normal electric 3/4" grinder. Chemical strippers aren't strong enough to get through all of the paint and bondo.

I did all new schutz. The old stuff had rust under it and was coming up on the tanks seam. Getting the old rubber off is annoying, but a wire brush makes it go by faster. It is also beneficial to remove as much rubber as possible with a chisel.
