Our Bay Bus
Here are a few shot of my sons bay bus project. As time and $$$$ allow we are moving forward. He has installed 944 brakes + hubs, with an air bag system. Hopefully the compressor will be on line this weekend. Our end goal is to install a 3.0 SC motor with a 915 transmission. This bus came from Texas via Eastern Washington, so the rust issues were nonexistent. It has dealer installed air conditioning as well as an external oil cooler.
Any help or suggestions regarding the 911 conversation will be greatly appreciated, http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1262914451.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1262914770.jpg |
Very nice
i will start a thread when i get ready to mine. are you using 944 control arm on your rear suspension? what master cylinder will you use. cheers ed |
If you need shots of something in particular let me know. If you can find a donor car it's a lot cheaper than gathering all the pieces. We exchanged some e mail on the Samba board about your K935.
I'd be interested to know how an air bag system handles. I'm using Koni double adjustable front shocks and Wevo/Ohlins single adjustable rear shocks. I also ran RSR re valved rear shocks for awhile. A fun project, keep us posted. |
From 88-93 I worked at St. Charles Foreign Car in St. Charles, MO. Back then, we had a customer that would vacation with his family in the 1972 bus he bought brand new, and only used for vacations. Over the years, the guys at the shop had done everything they could to the original motor to eek out every HP they could, making those trips through the Rockies as painless as possible.
Upon returning from a trip after the latest set of performance mods, and still being disappointed, someone mused "why not put a 911 motor in it!" Laughs were quickly replaced with "would it work?" As I recall, it ended up being a totally rebuilt CIS engine, tranny was sent to someone in CA for a performance rebuild, custom bellhousing and just about everything else was stock. Wider tires, different shocks...the only thing you could see on the outside was the rear bumper was moved back about 1" to accomodate the 911 muffler, the tailpipe was a single output on the left instead of the standard beetle style, and a small black louver was installed below the bumper to conceal the big muffler. It was a trip to drive, and would smoke Camaros and the like off the line...which made people really scratch their heads. Here are a couple of old scans that I have...apologies for the poor quality.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1269980202.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1269980294.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1269980382.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1269980548.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1269980569.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1269980590.jpg |

Upon returning from a trip after the latest set of performance mods, and still being disappointed, someone mused "why not put a 911 motor in it!" Laughs were quickly replaced with "would it work?" As I recall, it ended up being a totally rebuilt CIS engine, 75 or 76, tranny was sent to someone in CA for a performance rebuild, custom bellhousing and just about everything else was stock. Wider tires, different shocks...the only thing you could see on the outside was the rear bumper was moved back about 1" to accomodate the 911 muffler, the tailpipe was a single output on the left instead of the standard beetle style, and a small black louver was installed below the bumper to conceal the big muffler. I believe the project was finished in 88 or 89.... It was a trip to drive, and would smoke Camaros and the like off the line...which made people really scratch their heads. It was essentially a perfect condition bus, 2 tone white over beige. Full length aluminum roof rack, full bra on the front, all original interior. He still has it to this day... Never mind ... I found the answer to a question I had.
