1985 Fog Light Switch wiring HELL!!!

Hey Fellas,

OK, I am really pissed,

I gained access to my Center Vent Housing Tube thru the trunk and LIKE a RETARD, I pulled all the wires from my Fog Light Switch because there were all twisted up. The real retarded thing was I when I figured I could depended on Bentley Manual and Haynes to guide me to the correct connections and wire color.

WRONG:eek:

Per both manuals, the diagram calls for 4 connections on back of the Fog Light Switch 911.613.149.00:

Black/Blue Line to terminal #58
Brown to terminal #31
Grey to Terminal #15 (this connector had a piggy back male connect sticking out the side)
Blue/White line to terminal #1

Then here is the CRAPPY part a mystery wire:

Grey/Yellow Line wire WTF?

I know it goes on the back of the switch because it was the part of the cluster of wires I pulled but WHAT the HECK!

Tried the first setup of only 4 wires. Popped 20 fuses. What a PITA.

Noticed the Central Locking button did no light up, OK so I have something screwed up.

Then I connected the Grey with Yellow Stripe to the Grey wire on Terminal #15. Voila, Central Locking Button Lights Up.

But I keep blowing fuses, ran out of 16Amps and starting to go thru all my 25Amps.

Does anyone have a Clue on where that Piece of Poop Grey/Yellow wire goes?

Or is my Switch Shot?

TIA

Yes I tested the light within the knob, it lit when I put a 9 volt to it. Relay click when I jiggled the switch around. but keep popping the #8 fuse.

Thanks Gerry!!!

Oh Brother Gerry,

Thank you so much, I really appreciate your post.

OK, you found an extra wire (1,5 GR) but it does not have the dreaded YELLOW Stripe. Hmmm.

Could I ask a major favor, can you see where that extra line goes to?

I assume your baby 86 also has a Central Locking as my 85 since it was the year it was introduced.

BTW, does anyone know what is the meaning of the codes 0,5 1,0 1,5? Is that the thickness or guage in PAG Language?

Oops nevermind, opened my eyes to see the 1st jpeg. Thanks Gerry, yet again.

Well I tinkered around with the switch. Per diagram and when I opened it, there was a little capacitor. I think I blew it.

When I plug it back it and turn on the lights it does not light anymore but still blows the fuses.

I just ordered a new switch. I guess popping the fuses 20 times did that sucker in. Oh well. 3 days and I get a new one and this time I will plug the sucker in correctly.

The only thing is that damn GR/GE line. Damn PAG!!

DRACO A5OG 07-27-2009 01:46 PM

Emailed you Gerry.

OK, looking at the diagram, the only GR/GE is ashtray light coming out of the Light Switch, OK now I am totally confused, how the heck did that wire end up on the damn Fog Light Switch?

OMG kill me now!

0,5 , 0,75 , 1,0 , 1,5 etc are wire thickness in mm2.

0,5 is aprox 20 AWG
1,0 16 AWG
2,0 14 AWG

Also take note that Europeans use a comma instead of a decimal point.

Update.

Finally narrowed it down to a defective Fog Light Switch and a Lost Grey Wire.

Turned the Grey/Yellow as a 12 Volt source from Fuse #7. Once new Fog Light Switch comes in I will test it again.

In the mean time, I bypassed the Fog Light Relay and placed the two Fog Light Wires to Fuse #7 and an 8 amp fuse. I actually like the fact the Fog Lights turn on when Parking Lights turn on. If I keep this set up I am going to place a relay for safety and less strain on the light switch.

Or I could connect the Blue/White wire to Fuse #7 and reconnect #8 and the two fog light wires on #8 as PAG designed. My Fog Light Switch can be by passed only.

So #8 Fuse and Fog Light Realy are disabled until the new Fog Light Switch comes in.

A Million Thanks to Gerry for the crash course in EE.

Jim

P.S. I take back what I said about PAG. It was the POS that messed things up.

Update:

Replaced the Fog Light Switch. BINGO The new switch was less sloppy/loose.

The only thing is for some crazy reason my Fog Light Harness/Bundle has the Grey with Yellow Stripe instead of the Grey.

Also I relocated the Fog Lights to come on when I have the ignition on. Very pleased, that I can run the fog lights as Day Driving Lights. If was helpfull this morning when navigating thru freeway traffic.

Once again thanks Gerry! I owe yeah.
