shifter problem on SC
Driving my 79SC home from wrok today and I noticed that the shifter did not move the same as it did from second to third gear. I can make the shift, but it does not move over when it is in the middle of the 2-3 shift as before. The shift lever does not move the same. Does the shifter need a rebuild?

Possibly but more than likely it just needs a bit of adjustment. If you've never replaced the shifter bushings now would be a great time. Do a search for how to replace them.

it happened all at once. I made a few shifts and then could not get the 2-3 shift right. Thought it was me, but at the next light the same thing

Time for a factory short shifter. :)
The springs obviously get weak with time so I would plan to rebuild it or get an upgraded version. Wayne's book has a section on installing the short shifter. |
Oh god, don't bother with the "factory" short-shifter, it'll make little difference. Replace the bushings and install a WEVO shifter for not that much more. In my case--and I've spent probably $80,000 playing with a 911SC--it was the biggest single per-dollar improvement in the car.
Not that the WEVO is the ultimate, there's another one out there that a lot of people think is neater than tits--can't recall the name of it--but the WEVO is excellent. |
If it happened all at once.....Before you start replacing stuff, adjust the coupler 1st. (the search function will help you) If after you adjust the coupler, you still can't feel the 915 love, replace all the shifter and coupler bushings, etc. or as Steve suggests, get a WEVO. It is most excellent!

look for this other thread from a few pages back...
wevo shifter and coupler install for a 915 I'm not sure how to link it, but that's the title. Maybe I'll get me a Wevo, too! |

Check the easy stuff first.
+1 on the shifter bushings, and the coupler in the tunnel (under carpet in front of rear seats). |
I posted this after a similar problem:

If you are willing to spend the money, definitely go with the WEVO shifter, but don't forget to order the Wevo PSJ to replace the factory coupler as well. I did the shifter and the PSJ and it is way better than the factory short shifter I had in the car. 90% of the slop is gone (mostly by installing the PSJ) and the WEVO is spring centered which I like. And just to be clear, all the bushing in my shifter were replaced a month or two before I bought the WEVO, so the slop that went away was not because of old bushings. You will probably wish your current shifter broke long ago if you go with the upgrade. At least that's my opinion.

Speedman,
May I suggest before you spend any serious money to inspect the plastic bushings in the shift linkage (3 areas; shift lever, shift tube support and shift coupler). They do wear out and thus transfer less accurate motion to the gearbox. The springs in the shift housing are there to provide driver feedback when shifting into 5th and/or reverse. There are no springs for 1-4. Sherwood seinesystems.com |
