can any one tell me if an 86 sunroof mechanism (guide, tube, rails, head piece) fit a 72?

Some time in the late 80's (I think it was 89), the sunroof design changed. Prior to that, the parts you mentioned were interchangeable back to the early cars, including 72. I believe an 86 will work for you, but you may wish to confirm.

I was looking this up recently, and if memory serves the guide rails are the same from '65 up to '89. They changed with the 964 and the older style is NLA. New cables are only available for the 964 style (covered with felt), but can be used in a pre-89 by picking the fuzzy stuff off of them. You also have to trim the metal guide at the end of the cable a bit to get it to fit, but the cables are the same otherwise. It is an easier (and cheaper) project if you can keep your original guide rails.
