is this gasket important?

I have been fixing vac leaks and she is running MUCH better. A few months ago i had a very good shop locally replace the air box due to the PO having a back fire. While reaching around to the back of the box i can feel a gasket sticking out. im 99% sure its the one that goes between the air meter and the plastic box? I took her back to them and they said its not that important because its before the metered air. I do believe them but wanted to get some more thought about it.

it is this one

It was important on my '74 when I had CIS. If it wasn't important, it wouldn't have been installed. (I'm not trying to be a smarta**)...

But it does bring in the dirt so it like having a filter with a hole in it. Hard on the rings and a sloppy job of putting it together because there is adhesive on one side of the gasket.
It supports the air flow sensor, and fuel distributor and the flap and arm that connects the two items

will it make it run bad?? it cost me $1400 to have the air box replaced so i would think that gasket should have stayed in.....is this common?

Sounds sloppy. It was easy to install when I did it. Not so now!!

if they took off the box then that stands to reason they curled the gasket when they put the box back, take it back if they have any pride they should attempt to make you happy

It isn't right and for $1400 you should reach behind the airbox and find a gold nugget.

Make them fix it.
