1980 911SC Wheel Questions

I'm very new to the 911 World, so please be patient.

My SC has 6X16 Fuchs up front & 7X16 fuchs in the rear. I have been looking for a pair of 8X16 Fuchs for the rear; Boy they're spendy!

Question 1:
I came across these wheels & I am humbly asking you all if they will fit my SC? Even though they are 17's, the pricing ($350 for all four) is such that I hate to pass them by.

7x8.5x17's BBS that came off the later 993/996 cup series

Question2:
I know that 8x16 will fit the rear of my SC. Will 9"s also fit without modification, i.e., fender rolling, etc?

Thank you;

Richard

You would need spacers and longer studs because of the different offset required for the ABS brakes.

Thank You SC-TARGA.
I read several "Searched" threads & that was my understanding too. I'm not sure that it is worth doing, but the wheels certainly seemed like a bargain to me.

I have these exact rims (BBS Sport Classic I) on my 83 Cab..tires are 205 front 255 rear. I run hub centric adapters/ spacers front and rear. I will not be back in home till Sept. 1st or 2nd so I could not tell you exactly what spacers I am running but I think they are 1" front and 1.25" one side of rear and 1" on the other side of the rear. Rears might be 1.25" & 1.5"
The reason I have two different size spacers on the rear is so the wheels sit about the same distance from the rear wheel well lip. When I used the same size adapters on the rear either one would sit further in or the other would rub the wheel lip.. I thought having different size spacers would make the car handle weird because of wheel track not exactly the same side to side, but so far I can not notice anything.. I measured the distance from the wheel lip to the inner fender on both sides in the rear and one was about 3/8" wider thus the difference.

When I get home I will let you know what I am running..

Gregg

Thanks Gregg - I'd sure like to see a pic of your Cab!

At $350.00 for all four BBS wheels & center caps, I'll probably go ahead and buy them anyway. I'd be lucky to get one 8X16 Fuch for that! Two fake 8X16 Fuchs would set me back $550.00 shipped. Even though I'll have to buy spacers & tires, selling my Fuchs & Dunlop Direzza Star Specs will cover most of the new purchases.

I'm looking forward to your post;

Richard

Good spacers with studs COULD cost $400-500 depending on where you get them.

I had Cups on my SC and it required 1 inch front and 2.75 rear spacers. The offsets are different than the rims you are looking at but it will be close. I bought a complete set of used Fuchs replicas for $450.

EDIT: I just checked the Pelican site for the spacers to fit these wheels. I don't know the offset but the price would be very close.

Front-25mm x 2=$240.00
Rear-2 inch(you may need more to fit correctly)x2=$276.00

You'll need to use get the spacers/adapters that come with the studs.

I paid $800 for mine ready to bolt on with painted center caps ( which these look to have). I had to drive to NYC (Long Island) to pick them up as it cost me less in gas than the seller wanted to charge for shipping..We'll forget about not knowing that the day I was went up there to pick them up just happened to be the same day the NYC marathon was being run..nightmare!!!

I have no pics right now but will post some when I get home (Wed's). As far as the spacers/adapters. I bought all 4 (hub centric) off here and flea bay for about $200. I love the way these look on my car and cant beat the view of the 255 40 17's from the rear....meaty.

For $350 you can not go wrong as these bolt right on Boxsters and I am sure some of those owners would jump on them.

Thanks Gregg & Wayne!

I'm assuming that I can bolt the adaptor/spacers to my existing hubs without having to install longer studs in my hubs. Is this correct? I'm also curious about additional stress to the axles & CV joints, caused by the additional weight of the adaptors/spacers; as well as, any stress caused by the longitudinal increase in length of the rotating mass (Boy, that's a Mouthfull & it Doesn't Sound Like Me!). Evidently, with other owners using adaptors/spacers, my concerns are purely between my ears. I have no intention of racing or autocrossing - just spirited driving on back country & mtn roads.

Shipping on all 4 wheels will be approx $80.00; thus, I still think they're priced right & like Gregg mentioned, I can most likely sell them & get my $430.00 back. As I see it, the total cost of this wheel change will be approx. $1,750.00 (includes 4 new Dunlop's, wheels, freight, and new adaptor/spacers). I can live with that.

Thanks Again!

Richard

As Wayne stated you will need the ones with the studs attached..For a quick look at what they look like go to e-bay under Porsche parts (wheels) and look for adapters or spacers..Make sure you are looking at hub centric versions. These will have a ridge around the center hole on the front and a recess around the center hole on the back to sit flush on the factory hub.

I would buy them from here, used preferably. Once I get home I will let you know what I have and send some pics..Then you can post a wanted add here and keep checking the for sale adds as they do come up. Some people here are running them on the street. I would assume the non factory done wide-body cars Not sure about regulations on the track though. I know that the 930 ran some spacers on the rear maybe about 30MM I think.

As far as adverse wear on the CV's bearings, etc...I do not think it would be too much more than normal because you are adding that length but the wheel should be centered back over where it was originally because of the newer off set of the rim..It would be like buying the fake 993 cup rims for the SC/Carrea offset.. They just have this extra material built in to the rims to give you the 7.5" and 9" widths..But I'm no engineer and this is just my back yard figuring..Hopefully someone with more edumakatiun will chime in..

The adapters/spacers should be hub-centric and be 5x130mm bolt pattern. EBAY has spacers listed as universal. Don't get those.

I don't believe you will cause any more stress on suspension parts with the spacers. You don't intend to track the car so it's not a big deal. (Some PCA clubs do not allow anything but factory spacers.)

The difference I noted when going back to stock style wheels is the lightness without the spacers at each corner. It's probably not much but the car did feel more nimble instantly.

Enjoy the car and post pics of her with the new shoes.

Thanks to Everyone;

After much thought & the possibility I'll be kicking my self in the A$$ down the road, I've decided not to purchase the BBS Wheels, adaptors/spacers,tires, et al. I will continue my search for a reasonably priced pair of 8X16 Fuchs thru the winter. Otherwise come Spring, I'll buy a pair of cast Fuch replica's.
Thanks again everyone!
Richard
