The oil level gauge will only give you a correct reading when the motor is up to normal operating temperature (warmed up), the car is idling, and on a flat surface. It will read "empty" while you are driving. Don't panic.

The tip about pushing the clutch in all the way and pausing before you shift is right on. Even though you are a seasoned vet when it comes to driving a stick, the 915 needs to be treated with respect.

Finally, the brakes are great on air-cooled 911's, but they are NOT abs. Any kind of panic stop will result in front brake lockup. Take it easy in heavy traffic so that you don't bump anyone in the rear.

thanks for the tips all. really looking for more info on what tools i should bring along for the trip. i have been collecting them for the past 20 years and have more than your average master mechanic in the garage but it's hard trying to decide what to bring with me.

I would take an 18 inch piece of aluminum round stock and something to tap with. I have a 79 and the injectors stick sometimes. When even one sticks the engine will run like ****. Hold the rod on each injector and lightly tap with the persuader. Frees mine up every time. I've tried all types of injector cleaners and nothing seems to work. I gues once in a while the old girl just loves to bust my balls.

thanks guys, although i am not so sure security will let me fly easily with an 18" piece of aluminum in my bag. if i was the guard i would look at it as a possibly blunt weapon.

pardon me if this is a silly question but does the spare get stored flat, hence the need for the compressor? if so, is it possible to inflate it and just store it in the trunk in that state above it normal seat? if not will a wal-mart 12v inflator do the trick in it's place if it is gone/not working?

yes colapsable spare, , get a flat jack and remove old , install spare and inflate , drive again, the spare i have been told goes on the front even if you get a rear flat, take front put to rear install spare in front , has something to do with the width, SmileWavy


get the porsche now , you can always get a wife later, if so remember make sure she loves the car, not "likes the car " but make sure if she does that means you have to get another so she can have her own ( then you chose the good one ) ,

Sometimes the best asset for a long drive is phone #'s of guys along the route, just in case. You cannot take everything with you, but resources along the way sure makes up for it. Stopping for a break with a friend is very helpful. I do a 2000 mile round trip every year to visit family; now it takes two one day drives each way.

Take your laptop! You can always find help here if you need it. I have seen lots of threads where guys have been rescued by other pelicans during their trips.
I drove 3000 miles with a credit card, cell phone and a number for a car transporter. No problems....

Get both a spare DME relay and fuel pump relay. Every air-cooled 911 should have these in the glovebox.

laptop? that is so 2004! :) i have an iphone now.

It's an SC... no DME relay. But a red and a black relay would be nice to have.

i just noticed in my o.p. i listed it as an 80 while it is actually and 83, if that matters for any of the tips listed here. i will pick up a fuel pump relay but what is a "red and black" relay?


on a side note, just got home from the insurance agent's office. full coverage, with $300/$500 coverage and $100/$500 deductibles costs me $119 a year. comparatively my 04 jag with the same insurance is close to $400 a year. that was a nice bonus.

is that thru a "collector ins . please share , the only place i got quotes that low were with very stringent mileage and parking/usage restrictions.

i have state farm. my agent is www.dickmichael.com i was quoted $46 per 6 months with a value of $15k originally but then found out that upping the value to $25k only cost about $10 more every 6 months. due to the age of the car the only source they use for value verification is nada which lists an 83 targa as having a high retail value of $22.8k. I opted for the $25k value since there was no real way for them to dispute it and my agent agreed.


there are no restrictions at all. the car qualifies as a collector thus the reduced rate. in ohio we have 3 types of plates - regular, collector and classic/antique. classic only allows you to drive in parades and to shows but not daily or even weekend driving. once you buy the plate you are done for life (no renewal fees). the only restriction for collector is a car over 25 years old but it costs $10 per year more than regular (and it looks different).

classic/antique plates are issued according to the year of the car. so if you had a '78 the plates would look as they did in 1978.
