Rear decklid hood strut failure

Anybody have a solution for rear decklid strut failure. I have replaced these struts several times, and even went with the duel strut (decklid with whale tail)still failure.Thinking about the decklid rod sold by our host.Any inputs.
Thanx, Feisal

Do you have a whale tail?
I just replaced both front struts and the read deck lid strut, and so far so good.
How long after replacement did yours fail?

Which (who's) strut(s) did you buy on these several failed attempts?

Best,

Doyle

Agreed. How is it every other domestic and foreign car mfg. can make struts that last for years, some even decades, yet the ones on the 911, even the "heavy duty" ones have a life span of 1-3 years?

small diameter , short run? Bilstein makes most of these and the larger ones on SUV's seem to last forever.

Modify the right side to accept a strut vs the duel strut. I have had no problems since I did that.

The two I have on the parts shelf standing by for the once-a-year replacement sure aren't heche en Bilstein or anybody that reputable. And why should production of them be a "short run"? It's not like they need to be "engineered" to hold up a Porsche part. There are probably a thousand uses for each length and diameter of strut, from holding up toolbox lids to doodads on small powerboats.

And frankly, after our experience with the doubtful quality of two Boxsters, I will never again buy a new Porsche. Porsche used to condescendingly say, "The entry-level Porsche is a used Porsche." that should be slightly modified to read, "The quality Porsche is a used air-cooled Porsche."

The company has lost me, though I doubt they've noticed...

With my aftermarket turbo tail duals on each side should do it.

The trick on this is to double up the struts. Use the existing one you have and just add another one, very easy, simple and inexpensive. Credit goes to a good mechanic friend of mine.

That's great. Four friggin' struts to do what a Suburban does with one.

no, just two like any other trunk/hood on any other car. Don't know of any other car where just one strut is used to hold up a lid.

I don't know about other years, but on my 86, the engine lid only has a strut on the left side, the right is not made for a strut, at least not from the factory. Just double up the left side and it's good to go.

Yes, I have had a double strut set up for years and continually had the failure.(that's with a whale tail). My other 911's have simular failure.I'm going to modify the left side to accept a strut as per Scotts suggestion.

The turbos all had a 2nd strut on the right side due to the additional weight of the Turbo tail.

I am waiting on the right time to do this upgrade myself. I have the factory pass side hinge with attachment point for strut and the little bracket that attaches to firewall/ bulkhead. Only problem is access to weld the bracket on the bulkhead.

It seems that by putting both struts on the drivers side, the engine cover when open is put in a twist. This is because all support is on one side and nothing on the other.

Keep looking for the factory pass side hinge as they come up for sale every now and again..

How about this for a theory - if you store the car inside with the deck lid up, so the shock is fully extended, it should last longer?

My Carerra came with the firewall tab installed. When I put the tail on we simply bought the hinge tab and welded it on.

I recently learned the downside of putting dual struts on the driver’s side. I went to shut the decklid and didn’t push in the right spot. The hinge twisted like a pretzel. I got it mostly twisted back into shape and a new hinge but am now looking for a turbo passenger side hinge. Like deshetlr, my Carerra came with the attach point on the firewall.
