Can anyone tell me the paint color that is 027-9-2?

According to Paternie's Red Book 027 is the famously familiar Guards Red.

A guy told me that they did not produce guards red in 74. He will be immediately chastised and flogged.

The 027 paint code was introduced in 1974 as standard color 'India Red' ... and in 1976 it was called 'Indian Red.'

The '9' on your paint nomenclature plate means the paint is for the Porsche conpany, and the '2' means that the Glasurit company was the supplier.

So, Warren, is the Red Book generally unreliable? For 1974 it lists only two other reds - 042, Peru Red, a standard color and 024, Rose Red, a special order color. There is no mention at all of India Red!

Thanks for your answer! But, Rod is still throwing some doubt in my mind by his source. Any further to add to Rod's statement? Just trying to make sure I get the right color when I touch the car up in a few spots.

I wasn't try to discredit that 027 is 'Guards Red' ... it is! According to the local auto paint store, they don't even want to know the 'name' of the color, because the numeric code is what they go by, and one shade can have several names over the years, and that is true of all major auto mfrs, including Porsche! As an example, Chrysler code 990 was 'Petty Blue' for Plymouths, and 'Corporate Blue' on Dodges in the late '60s and early '70s!

1972 was the first year of the three-digit paint codes, and there was no '027' that year, and the first appearance was the '74 list in my service manual.

Sorry for the confusion! I remember seeing a couple of project cars in magazines in the late '70s that claimed to be painted Indian Red, and the appearance was the same as the cars in the '80s that were identified as Guard's Red, but I don't know the exact year of the name change, as my '78 edition Volumes 3-6 service manuals only have data through '76 models, and my microfiche seldom get used because of the hassle trying to find specific information!

By the way, Warren, thanks for the info about what the "9" and the "2" stand for! I didn't know the rest of the story - as Paul Harvey might say. Do you happen to know what paint supplier was assigned the number "1" in 1988?
