911 Won't Start

I have a 1976 911 and can't get it running. Seems to be entirely electrical in nature based on what I have determined. The car has the Perma-tune CD box in it already, but I can't determine if that is the problem, although that is my suspicion.

What I have done:

1. I have checked power to the box, and it is getting more than 12 volts.

2. I have tried a new coil, but that has changed nothing.

3. I have generally checked all fuses and connections having anything to do with the ignition system and everything looks fine.

4. The only spark I can get is if I pull the HT lead off of the distributor, and switch the ignition on, I get a strong spark against a good ground. I get absolutely no spark when I am turning the motor over.

Can someone please help me determine if it is the CD box, or if there is anything else I can do prior to spending the money on a part that I might not need.

THANKS!!

There is a wire that runs from your points on your distributor to your permatune.. its what tells the permatune to fire a plug.. Check your points and that wire.

I cant explain why you are seeing a spark from the coil wire to ground when you switch ignition on.. didnt think the system should send a spark on ignition switch on.. but I never tried it I guess.. BTW.. BAD idea to do what you did.. you could fry your coil and your permatune doing this.. ALWAYS use a spark plug to test spark.. My opionion anyway.. others may disagree.. but hey the advice is free.

Basically the only acceptable coil with a CD box is a Bosch 001. last 3 digits on the end of the coil. 001 is not really a coil but an amplifier.

If you only get one spark when you turn the ignition on chances are the CDI box is damaged. I would get a used Bosch box - they are more reliable. Permatune has a less than stellar track record when it comes to reliability.
