I have a problem that has everyone baffled. Despite the fact that I have an entirely new wiring harness in my car, the turn signal indicators on the speedo glow when I start the car. After a while, they get dimmer and dimmer, and eventually the glow goes away. I can't imagine that it would be a ground problem. If is was a ground problem, wouldn't they glow all the time?
Is it possible that one of the bulbs is not grounding properly, causing this condition? If you use the turn signals while the indicators are glowing, the correct indicator will blink brightly, and as one is blinking, the other goes blank. While the one is not blinking, they both glow. Any idea? Thanks! ------------------ Michael '78 911SC Euro |

Sounds like a turn-signal relay problem to me! What does it do when you turn on the emergency flasher?

Both the turn signals and the emergency flashers work perfectly.

I hate to tell you but it IS a ground problem (most likely). Check every single wire and clean all of the connectors. It takes FOREVER but eventually you find the problem. Good Luck

Ground problem I guess as well-the symptoms sound familiar.
I fixed it be removing/cleaning all 4 light units on the car, polished all sockets (incl. the instrument's, bended back the copper contacts, applied electronic contact cleaner spray, wiped dry, applied some grease, replaced all bulbs (incl. the instrument ones), applied new ground straps on the light units (double security), and finally got everything back together with new screws and new seals. Don't ask me what the problem was exactly, but it never came back for the last 2 years. But as Warren usually is right, also try a new relay. And also check the relay socket-maybe it's cracked??? Guys,
I didn't mean specifically that the relay was bad, just that everything that Jens suggested around and connected to the relay need to be checked for corrosion, because it is a so-called 'sneak-path' that is causing the problem! The relay is causing the problem, but it may not be the relay that is at fault! Corrosion is conductive in some circumstances, and the fact the lamp goes out after a while suggests that the heating up of a connection causes the 'sneak-path' to disappear. Moisture/condensation is more than likely a factor in the problem. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
