Steering Wheel Play

Hey– I have a 1985 911 Coupe. I THINK that I suddenly notice some forward movement in my steering wheel. In other words, when I press on it at the 12 o’clock position, it moves forward about an eighth of an inch. Again, don’t think I have felt this before. In previous “Pelican Inspired” projects, I have removed my steering wheel twice.

Anyway, I suspect that I did not tighten something in the steering wheel reattachment and want to know if any Pelicans can chime in and tell me that I need to open this back up and retighten the wheel. If I push on the top of my steering wheel, is it supposed to move inward slightly? Again, please forgive the neophyte here – I searched the forum first; promise! - Rick

Yeah, in and out is not as common as up and down. Your answers will be forthcoming, I don't exact know that situation.

There is a bearing that is known to fail in the steering shaft - there is a cheap fix available, do a search for "steering bearing" or similar.

Cheers

Fishcop and Milt - I am honored for your responses Gentlemen. The "play" that I refer to is an up and not so much down situation. I can press on the steering wheel at 12 o'clock and it will move inward/upward slightly. Going to search "steering bearing; or maybe just walk out and start doing what I should do and TINKER!

Rick,

The factory bushing could be wearing or coming apart unevenly so that is the reason you have more movement in one direction than another.

It sounds like it just needs the bushing repair.

Perfect Fit, Perfect Fix

I wanted to thank you guys for a perfect diagnosis of my steering wheel issue. Confident in the sound advice that I needed to replace my bushing, I decided to go with the MDS nylon one and contacted Mitch Leland. Once opened, I could see that my original 25 year old bushing was pretty much dust!

Mitch is a trusting guy with a fantastic product - his low-key approach certainly met with magic! Glossy photos and well written instructions added to the ease of the installation (as did my previous Pelican-insprired project with replacing the turn indicator/high-beam switch and already having the right tools).

I'll continue my 99.9% loyalty to our host. Thanks so much for these forums Wayne - they add enjoyment to our cars through community and comaraderie! - Rick
