What's the current thought on replacement valve springs? Factory, Andial or other?
I'm contemplating replacing the E cams with S types. While I'm in there, I was going to try these Ti valve spring retainers I picked up and check the existing springs. If they're borderline, I'd like to replace with something appropriate. Are aftermarket springs overkill as their price reflects? Thanks, Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |

I have never heard anything bad about factory valve springs. I know the ones Andial sells are supposed to give you another 2-300 rpm or something. I would definately throw that in the "overkill" boat for the price unless you are building a serious engine.

Mr. Lee,
Sorry I can't help answer your question, but hopefully you can answer mine! How are you checking your springs? Did you find a "spring checker thingy" somewhere? I am about to re-assemble my heads and would like to check the springs before I do. I can't find a tester anywhere. Thanks! BK |

Guys,
The factory springs are supposed to be safe to 7500 rpm with 'S' cams, and the 'sport springs' sets and retainers from Andial, Jerry Woods, and AJ-USA are supposed to be safe to 8000 rpm. Bruce Anderson recommends them for track-driven cars that could be possibly over-revved accidentally, as a form of insurance, and I agree with his logic. So, that is precisely what I will be putting in my engine later this year when I do a top-end freshen-up ... along with Jerry Woods' GE-60 cams, SSI's, and the polished Dansk dual outlet sport muffler! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
