brake piston spreader
Show me your tool.
I cant find one to buy, so plan on making something to spread the pads and pistons when changing brakes etc. Anyone got something I can copy - or know where I can buy something useful. Thanks Alan

My neighbor had one of these tools that worked great on my mom's Buick, I haven't tried it on a Porsche yet but it looks like it would work. http://www.mactools.com/product/tabid/120/p-318516-bp7034.aspx

I have one of those, and I use it a lot. I don't think I paid anywhere near that much for it, so shop around. I have had mine for about 20 years though.

Peppy - but what are you levering against -even if it is wood.
The 930 has 16 pistons to retract. I'm going thru a set of pads about every 3 track days. Getting a bit tedious. The Mac tool looks like the business. Thanks Alan

Something like this works fine for me. I usually can do mine with my hands but the above bar clamp is inexpensive and does the trick. I just put some pressure on the pads and eventually they will give in to the constant pressure applied. The pads on the clamp are rubber like so they don't mess up painted rotors.

OK, I'm in the process of making something a bit like 4sd911 posted - but to do dual pot calipers.
If mine dont work, the clamp gizzmo looks good. I've been using a G clamp over the caliper housing but dont like squeezing on the calliper cooling fins. Would rather spread them internally if possible. Thanks Alan

I use the handle of a pair of channel locks, has worked well for years. The curve allows me to pry off the rotor and push both pistons in (I've got 16 of them too) then the pads slide right in. The handle is coated with a rubber material, so no marring either.

What we have done for pad changes during endurance races and will work well when not in a rush. Is to weld some old brake pad backing plates to the jaws of a pair of channel locks, pictured above, and then just insert and spread the handles.
Cost is old pair of channel locks, used brake pads, and a bit of welding. |

This is what I use:
http://www.girodisc.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=31_179_358&products_id=206 I had to machine the tongues a bit to fit in my 930 calipers.

I bought something like this on ebay. I've been using it at the track for three years changing pads several times a year. My buddies use it to. Works like a charm.

Peppy, I've done it, and am trying to avoid it - but you really should not lever against the rotor. The runout specs are about 0.1 mm. Leaning on it doesn't help.
Grant s tool looks great, and I have not seen the one of Sean's before either. If my home job doesnt work out I'll have a look on e bay, and failing that weld up some channel locks - now I know what you call them. (We call them poly grips, downunder - you guys just have to think of new words for a lot of stuff - why can't you be like us?) regards Alan

Poly grips, spanner, boot, hood, football... Well, football I can understand. Hmmm, maybe someone should come up with an English to English dictionary.
