'79 Targa Bar Removal and Repaint

Hey everyone- I'm new to the forum and pretty sure that this topic has been addressed...if someone could guide me to the previous thread- that would be appreciated.

I bought a '79 911SC at the beginning of the year...the previous owner decided to have the roll bar sprayed the same color of the car (white)...in which I'm not a huge fan. I'd rather remove the exterior roll bar panel (if it's an easy process and I'm not jeopardizing damaging my window or targa top seals) rather than painting it in place. I say this because the previous spray job has a few signs of overspray (the targa emblem was not removed or sufficiently prepped).

I've read previous posts on good paint matches, so I think I'm good there.

Any thoughts? I've been trying to find a good guide on the removal process but have turned up nothing.

Thanks for your help!

i would leave it in place. same goes w/the targa emblem. use masking tape and a razor blade to mask the targa emblem and mask off the rest of the car. sand a bit w/fine grit paper and spray w/wurth flat black lacquer. looks great

The targa bar is held on with 2 bolts (8 or 10mm) on each side. Take the rear tire off for better access. Once the bolts are off Targa Bar lifts right off.

I think you will find a few screws along the top as well, just below the rubber seal.
Along with 4 plastic screws at the bottom.
Not a bad job, If you can undo the bolts under the wheel wells.
Helps if you have 2 pairs of hands to take off and put back on

You don't want FLAT black, you want SATIN black.

Rust-Oleum 9999 is a perfect match also and you can pick it up anywhere.

And if you do decide to remove the band make sure you spray the 4 nuts in the wheel well down with PB plaster and take your time. If you are not carefull you will break the studs that attach to the band. You can weld on new ones if you have to. Also, there are numerous little screws that are behind the targa seal that hold the band to the inner roll bar.

I picked up a used targa bar cover. The plan is to refinish the new one and put it on then sell the old one; its pretty faded.

A couple of questions:
1. Has anyone had luck filling the holes where the script attaches? If so, I would love the run down. I want to loose the script because its hard to clean around and I don't like text on my car.
2. Has anyone powder coated vs. painted the bar and if so, how did that come out? Powder coating would require filing the holes for the script with metal. How easy would that be to get done without warping the bar?

Thanks,
Karl

The problem with ANY spray can is it will chip off about as fast as you can put it on. if you powder coat it fantastic .. or at least use a 2 part epoxy paint that will be somewhat robust.

Link to Mine

I took mine off, stripped, sanded and repainted it with Rustoleum primer and Satin Black. It came out great and is still holding up great 5 years later.

Here's a bit of info on removing:

Taking apart (but not off) the Targa bar

Good luck, Gordo
