Need help with engine missing!

I have an 81 SC 3.0 that was just completely rebuilt. The engine ran excellent but after I would shut it off, when I restarted it, it had the hunting idle and ran really rich. But once it ran for approx. 2 minutes or so it smoothed out and ran really good.

Since then adj the mixture screw ccw to attempt to lean it out some. The engine then ran great but after letting out of the gas to allow the engine to slow the car down it began to slightly backfire or spit if you will. So I richened it back up just a little and now here is my new issue:

The car through first gear will not stop pulling........I shifted it at 5200 rpms and once I hit second the engine seams to be starving for something around 3500 - 4000 rpm. It does the same thing in third gear. It is cutting out at this rpm range for some reason. I am not sure if it is starving for air, fuel or what?
But it never did this before! I suppose the air /fuel mixture screw could be way out of tune but I only turned it in 1/8 incs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Frank

Is there a full throttle switch in cis? If so that could explain the high rpm cutout.

Hunting is usually a vacuum leak in som form...make sure all those hoses are tight!

If youre trying to lean out an enrichment you have to disconnect the oxygen sensor in the exhaust then you are free to adjust everything and then you plug it back up when youre happy.
