Hi guys. I might need a bit of help with my car's VIN#. My insurance company is asking me for clarification on my 88' Carrera's VIN# and the only confusion I can see if whether or not the 3rd character in the RoW vin# is an o or a 0.

Is it the letter o or the number 0?


Maybe a dumb question, but the ownership permits here make it hard to tell the difference between an o or a 0.

You're correct sir - it's definitely a capital 'o'.

The first 3 characters of the VIN are the "World Provider Identifier" assigned by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

"W" is the country code for Germany, and Porsche is assigned "WPO".

I understand that the letters "O, I, and Q" are never used in vin numbers because of the confusion with numbers. I have always listed my vin with a zero in the third position without any issues.

In the technical specification booklets published by Porsche where they describe how to decode their VIN numbers, at least for the two in my possession, the capital 'O' in 'WPO' and the '0' in the other character positions are very easy to distinguish due to the font used.

All 0 are zero, No letter O.

When I pulled a CarFax on my car - I used the letter O and all the info came back.
I did not try using a zero
