-77 911s: Steering wheel roughness
When I start driving the steering seems to be ok. But after a while it gets strange in the way that it gets ragged/rough. It feels like something restrains the steering, there is some extra resistance a small part of the wheel rotation (just a few cm). When the extra resistance disapear the stearing is ok until next time the same problem occurs.
Any idea on what the problem is? |

Obviously, it could be several different problems. The simple items would be a goodplace to start.
1. Check the u joints on the steering rod, located in the smuggler's box. A little oil can loosen them up. They should be free to rotate without any binding. 2. The bushing directly under the steering wheel may be breaking up and bits are getting in the way of the wheel movement. 3. The steering rack may need rebuilt or, at the very least, re-greased. For more info on these items, use the search function for this forum to read more on how to repair/replace the items.
