Best way to clean out an oil cooler?

Picked up a nice B&B oil cooler and lines for the nose of the 911. Of course wanted to have it pressure tested just to be safe. Before installation, what's recommended for cleaning it out? It came out of a running 911, but had been sitting on a shelf for a while. No grenaded engine schrapnel, but who knows what dirt or moisture might have gotten in there.

Let me know how it works. Either my B&B is so damn efficient it doesn't retain any heat in the core (I do have a dump chute behind it that exhausts all the airflow) or there's something wrong with it. One thing I can say is that I have absolutely no overheating problem...

Been through this all on a long thread that I initiated three weeks ago, so no need for anybody to ask me if the thermostat is working, or if it's air-bound, or if the inlet line is hooked to where the outlet line should go, etc.etc. We've been through all that. I'm just interested in somebody else's actual experience with the same cooler.

Stephan, not to hijack Ed's thread, but i'm pretty sure Bill Verburg has the same B&B cooler.
You might ping him?

Ed,
Get the cooler ultrasonically cleaned. There are several outfits that service light duty, aircooled aircraft who would be a great resource for you. I used one on the west coast, but many others would be closer.

You could soak it in acrylic thinners for 12 hours before getting it ultrasonically cleaned... (sealed container for safety)

This would dissolve any oil sludge and get it 98% clean before the final ultrasonic clean.

It goes without saying... Store it in a sealed plastic bag if you're not going to install it straight away.

Thanks all, never though about checking with my FBO at the airport. I've gotten MS and NAS spec fasteners from them before, so asking about cooler services is a natural.

And Peter- the cooler was stored with the fitting closed off, all hoses capped, and bagged. I just want to be safe. The shop that pressure tested it first flushed it with steam, then pressure tested in their dunk tank, then flushed again with high pressure steam. I'm probably fine but not willing to sacrifice my engine testing on the car.

You'd think that here in Chicago, with 2 major airports and lots of General Aviation FBO's that one would clean coolers. Nope, not one. Several said they replace the cooler if the engine has failed. Some said the just flush with hot soapy water then flush with oil. And one said they send the coolers back to Lycoming to be checked. Looks like I'll have to send mine out too. Guess it won't be on the car in time for the 3 back to back weekends beginning Labor Day weekend. Darn, so much for good intentions.
