Post Fan on oil cooler

I bought a SPAL fan to put on the oil cooler of my 85 911 with a manual switch. Purchased it from RacerWholesale based on a Rennlisters recommendation. Got the #292 which is a 5.6 inch fan. Got the puppy in my hands and the diameter is fine but its almost 4 inches tall.

Has anyone done this modification and would a fan this depth fit in the fender and on the cooler? The only way I can see to do this is to relocate the horns. If this is what has to be done, where is everyone sticking them?

TIA,

Joe

Thumbs up

Joe, I just did a cooler upgrade on my SC, and I used a 6.5 inch Spal pusher fanon it. You do indeed need to relocate the horns to get the hole thing to fit. I have C2 bumpers, so I had plenty of room inside the bumper for the horns (made a custom bracket). The other thing you may want to do is put a duct in the bumper to allow better air flow to the fan itself.

Paul,

Where did you relocate the horns to and how difficult was the mod? Did the fan make a noticeable difference in the temps? I am more concerned with heat when I get stuck in traffic. You are right about a scoop and am looking into this as well.

Thx,

joe

Joe, I put the horns right behind the license plate in the front bumper. I have a after market C2 style bumper, so I have plenty of room for the horns. I made a bracket and attached it to the license plate bolt. As far as helping with heat, I have only run the car once since the upgrade because of poor weather here in Utah (it is actually snowing here today, temp right now is 37 deg)! However, I saw a 15 deg drop in temps on my one test when I flipped the fan on (15 deg in 5 min or so). The car was running at 195 at idle with ambiant temps at 80 deg. I do think it will help while in traffic, at least a little.

Just got the whole kit from Pelican, there is a horn relocation kit there as well.

Will let you all know how it goes... Got it together, just need to put it in now...
