How do I remove the shifter..HELP
I'm trying to change the shifter coupling that is at the bottom of the shifter lever assembly and cannot figure out how to remove the shifter from the shift rod that goes to the rear coupler, everything else is removed, including the console, AC controls and three bolts that hold the shifter to the floor board.

Well on my '75, there's a ball and cup bushing "coupling" that merely presses together. If you have removed all obvious bolts, screws and other hardware, and you're not seeing anything else, then perhaps your shifter is the same, and all you need to do is pull it apart. It "pops" back together again when under pressure.

There are FIVE bolts, the three that hold it to the tunnel, and the two smaller ones that hold the shifter housing and the shift rod together. You'll never get the assembly apart with those connected... http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_short_shift_tindel/911_short_shift_kit_install.htm |
Pazuza, thanks for that. I got it off, replaced the bushing and found the rear bushing is broken into 2 pieces... the piece with the 2 screws going through it.
Got it all back together, took it for a ride and NO DIFFERENCE, sugar! It's got to be that rear bushing because I just replaced the shift coupler, now the shifter bushing, there's only one left and I don't have it. One hour job took me four hours... great. |

"Reassemble and take it for a test drive." I can't remember what it was that took extra time, but it seemed to me that I needed to hold something in place with zip ties attached to the pedal assembly in order to get one of the bolts back into place. I remember wondering if I was ever going to get it back together. YMMV;) |
