2.2 liter engine and trans that will not separate
I know this really sounds stupid but I have an old 2.2 L engine and trans that will not part. I found a 70T in a field about 8 miles from where I live on the Eastern shore of MD and it was a true rust bucket, engine locked (from rust, I think). I have unbolted the trans from the engine and it will not separate and yes, I have used force. Any ideas, am I missing something here? Judging from the articles on engine, trans removal, unbolt and it comes apart. Thanks for any help or advice.

You need to reach into the "window" of the trans and rotate the throwout bearing off the clutch arm.
This is unique to the '70 and '71's. (IIRC?) |
A few possibilities.
1. Most likely: It's just stuck from the number of years that they've been sitting. The input shaft could be rusted to the clutch and/or flywheel, or the mag engine case and mag trans have "corroded" together. In either case, penetrating oil and a little force will be required. 2. Fairly unlikely: A previous owner decided to update to a newer 915 trans with the helper spring-style clutch arm, or they updated to that style clutch arm on the existing trans. The issue here is that the throwout shaft must be removed in order to separate the engine and trans. 3. Possible? Did you remove the starter? the starter bolts are part of what hold the trans and the engine together. |
Thanks Todd, I knew it had to be something relatively easy. Just a sidelight, they junked the car in 1987 thinking the motor had blown and when disassembling the top end, the carb linkage (throttle body linkage) on the right side had broken between the rear two carb barrels. What a waste but it was 600 numbers from mine for $200. Steve

Todd, yes, starter was out and it could be rusted together, but I have had it sitting on the front of the motor, balanced with the trans in the air and spraying wd40 on the shaft. Thanks for the response. Steve

I have the same thing on a VW motor and figure the output shaft is rusted to the clutch disc,
I am going to drill a hole in the trans case above the output shaft and shoot penetrating oil down.... But I would love to hear how you solve it.... SB |
Thanks to all, relieved pressure on the fork that pressed up to the TO bearing, rotated the TO bearing with a screwdriver, removed the transmission, took about 15 minutes. I do not think I will miss the weekly agitation from fooling with this. Again, thanks to all. Steve
