Relay socket help
For those that read the turbo board- sorry for the dual post.
I just finished replacing 2 fuel pump relays and sockets due to the all too common 930 fuel pump relay overload situation. I installed 2 inline blade type fuses and now I am having a bear of a time getting the relay sockets into the holder on the fuse panel. I am able to get half of the socket seated, but for the life of me cannot finish the install. I have tried spraying with wd40 to no avail. I was thinking of "softening up" the socket with gentle heat from a heat gun, but was advised against it. Does anyone have any suggestions? |
It took a while to get mine seated.
After half was in I used a small flat screwdriver and pulled the rest of it up till it popped in place. |
If you are talking about the round Werle relay sockets with the button on the back, there is usually a hole on the front side of the socket directly opposite the button. If you insert a blunt or rounded drift into the hole you can push the button into the mounting whole from the front side. A little lube on the button helps a lot.

I was just able to get it with a combination of very brief heating with the heat gun, WD40 a lot of grunting, and prying with a flat blade screwdriver. Couldn't do it without the heat- even though it barely heated the socket up, just enough to make it more pliable (less than 15 seconds or so). No way to push it through the front. Must be a different type of relay socket, Joe.

Easy peasy.... gently heat up with hair dryer unit...not a heat gun as it'll get too hot. Pops right in gently and when it cools its OK and hard to get out.
