Loose chain housing stud

I was working on changing my right cam seal and when I removed the tensioner I found the press fit shaft really loose. What is the standard course of action when this happens? Just get a used housing or is there an acceptable repair method? I can weld or machine a part but is it worth the effort?

Also, I was thinking about all the bad things that could have happened if the stud totally failed. Why didn't the factory bolt the shaft to the back of the housing, in addition to press fit.

I started this whole thing because I was chasing a pretty substantial oil leak. Before I dropped the engine I saw oil coming from the area of the epoxy at the back of the chain housing but couldn't determine for sure if it was the epoxy area or the cam seal above it. I thought about just slapping some JBWeld on it but now I'm glad I tore into it.

Probably need to replace the shaft with a tight fitting one. Other option may be to "redneck" the repair and coat the shaft where it enters the housing with JB Weld and put some on the back and see if that works; but I would get a replacement shaft or have one made.

IMO you should by a new chain box. The hole in the box is probably distorted just putting a new shaft in might not be enough.

Unfortunately, when you see the price of a new chain box you might crap yer pants.

I just lucked out in the same way with my left chain box. Had a bad leak behind the box just like you. When removing the idler arm the shaft came with it.

The sealant on the back of the boxes is as from the factory I believe. If you want to replace it I would post a WTB in the parts classifieds. Tom Butler in CT (I forget his screen name) and others usually have anything someone is looking for.
