Steering wheel leather

Hi all.
Just wondering if anyone here has tried to re-colour their faded leather steering wheel, and what you would recommend (other than boot polish ).
Thanks.

Hi Sean - I've used a very good leather colorant from the seller named "SeatsRestore" on E-bay, but only for my seats. My steering wheel cover had deteriorated, so, I bought a four-spoke black replacement from our host. The kit was great! Recovering it took some time, patience, and hand work (along with a breaker bar and a 27mm deep socket to remove the wheel) but was easily the project with the most direct impact for me.

If mine was only faded, and the leather was not eaten up too much, I might try a colorant kit first. The SeatsRestore guy sends you leather samples to ensure color match - very professional and fast.

I used standard leather dye - the same stuff I used on the edges of the seats that were showing a bit of wear.

Thanks fellas,

Hi Rick
I’ve found Seats Restore on EBay and their product and their colour matching seems to be exactly what I am after. I'll give the Colorant a go first and if that doesn’t quite work out I’ll buy the cover kit as you’ve done. Thanks again.

I can't speak from personal experience but I've been meaning to give 'Feibrings' (mentioned in this thread) a try.

I had Tony at Autobahn triple wrap my early wheel. It is phenomenal!

I used Surflex from Colorplus about three years ago to change my steering wheel color from brown to black and it looks good and has held up great. They carry Porsche colors or they can match from customer samples.

Porsche Crest Leatherique has a solution

It's my understanding that using a regular leather dye, even a really good one, on a steering wheel won't give you the results you were hoping for. The wheel on many Porsches has a shiny sheen that is also not slick so the wheel won't slip in your hands. I've bought some special steering wheel dye for a reasonable price from George at Leatherique (www.leatherique.com) but I haven't used it yet. You also need a leather prep agent that he also sells in small quantities.

So far, George has been spot on with everything he's told and sold me so I don't have any reason to doubt this will work just as well. George is very responsive by both phone and email and he's a Porsche enthusiast.

Thanks for posting this Dave. It's one of my all-time favorite threads, right up with the one from the kid who put Armor All on the tread of his tires to make them "jet fokkin' black," and then couldn't figure out why he lost traction and totaled his car!

Thanks.
I just replaced my old, faded steering wheel.
With nothing to lose, I decided to "rejuvenate" the old wheel. This is the outcome:

No, the wheel is not too shiny.

No, it is not slippery. In fact, it is quite grippy without leaving any residue on your hands.

Total cost...pennies

This is what I used:
