Project 993 Conversion - Update
 
It's been a while so I thought I'd post an update on my project.

I put the motor in the car and got it running @ 3 weeks ago. Aside from the type of expected "teething" problems everything went pretty well. At this point I had just guessed (on the extreem conservative side) on all of the ignition and injection maps of the Haltech system. The motor definately has some balls and a ton of torque. I started to put some miles on the car and that's when the bad news begins.

I was only getting three pounds of boost. I changed the drive pulleys and wound the supercharger and hard as I could and only got up to 5lbs. After discussing this with the sc people they admitted they originally recommended the wrong sc for my setup! I actually need the next size larger (mp90). Then I was driving my beast (named appropriately)to my freinds shop to put my new exhaust sytem on. I saw in my mirrors that the car was smoking pretty bad. I pulled over to check it out and my front oil cooler had busted and spewed out oil and it was traveling under the car to the SSI's and smoking like a motha. Long story short.....I fixed the oil cooler and put it all back together and when I started it back up I found out that the brief starvation of oil caused some damage to the 1-3 bank and sheared the cam alaignment sprocket. Pull motor and tear down http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/frown.gif So, I pulled the motor and took it down to the short block. The good news is that I did not bend any valves or damge any main/rod bearings. The 4-6 bank was also ok after thoughorly checking. I had my cam re-ground and bought another cam tower and put everything back together. I also switched the clutch out from the 6 puck type to a stock Sachs one which is a hell of a lot better.

Since I had the motor out I went through the trouble of installing a new sc, the bigger one. Unfortunately it was not just a bolt on changeout. It required major refabrication of a lot of stuff. Thank God I have a freind with such a shop that I can use when ever I want. When I got all of that done and was back on the road I installed the new exhaust. Everything running good and was getting 7 1/2 lbs of boost. The problem is that even with the serpentine belt system the pulley for the sc is slipping under a lot of load. I took it to the tuner and dyno place today to get it tunned and made a lot of good progress. The problem is the sc belt is slipping too much to really tune the thing appropriately. When its on the dyno and the engine is under load its more evident of the slipage. To alliviate the slipage I tightened the belt as much as I could without going too far and damaging the alternator again. One thing is for sure. Standing right next to this motor at 6k rpm under load is almost frightening!

I am going to go to a full cog belt system so I won't have any more belt slipage. Somehow I have to come up with a crank, sc and alternator pulleys that are all coged and a belt to fit. I will start on that manyana. I will keep you guys posted of my progress. And ohhh by the way, next time I think of doing one of my little "projects" please kick me in the ass!

Every mechanical problem can either be interpreted as a 'sign' (i.e. that you ought to get a Honda econobox for the street and a simple, easily-replaceable go-kart for the track), or a 'test' (that the promised land of automotive nirvana is just a few more weekends' work away, and that it would never taste so sweet if it didn't take so much out of you, and that it will all be 100% worth it in the end).

Yours is the latter, I think. It's a test, and you're going to beat it. When everything is sorted out, you're going to have a car that's 1) a work of art, 2) a supercharged monster, and 3) a daring, crazy, defiant and awesome mark that you've left for whoever keeps track of what happens on planet earth.

Mark,

I'm so pleased that you're able to document and post details to your website, so that we can all watch and learn. My friends and I were blown away by the exhaust note recordings on your site!

If it wasn't for guys like you and Jack, with others, pioneering and daring "to go where no man has gone before" it'd wouldn't be anywhere near as much fun for the rest of us.

I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say we were all bummed to hear about your setback. Good thing it wasn't too serious.

What sort of hp/bhp figures is The Beast throwing down? We'd all be keen to know! Did the SC place back-trade the smaller blower?

Keep it up! Don't worry getting your ass kicked... Your car kicks plenty already!

the wrong supercharger? all of the above that you mention were the main reasons i walk away from that type of proyect,when i was going to beef up my car,did you get any numbers from the dyno? i know the belt was slipping but any numbers came out?was the haletech as simple to install and tune?

Now I know why you haven't updated in a few weeks - you've been very busy!
Very impressive that you have been able to do all of that in just three weeks.
I know you'll get it right and I thank you for sharing. This information is invaluable to others who wish to do a similar project.

Hello

If you refabricate the rear engine mount ( or use a 964 unit ) you can use a wider poly rip belt or switch to a toth belt. Later is no slip but brake solution.

It is also possible to make a king gear drive.

You will find the parts in farmer machines but they will not like high revs ( straight cut ) and have a brake loose clutch in the tube ( shear pins ).
Finding a wormdrive will be better. Maybe a 547 engine can give some parts away.

Ever thought of junking the s/c and converting to turbo instead? A set of turbo headers, a high flow scavenge pump and a K27-7200 wil match brilliantly with your haltech, i/c and intake manifold. No more worries about the belt drive and the consequences of overtightening, slipping, etc.

Juan, no useable number from the dyno. The boost would go to 7 lbs and then fall off. I still think my original projection of 350-375 is very doable. Nothing has been "simple" on this project.

Rarly, I've been on vacation for two weeks, that's how I have gotten so much done.

I will post again as soon as I get my cog belt system working. cheers to all.
