Is and oil filter an oil filter?

I didn't think so. So someone removed the oil cooler from my 3.2 and put a second oil filter in its place. It happens to be a Mann filter. It's time to replace it and no one in Reno seems to sell this particular filter, so I got a cross reference list on line.

Apparently the Mann filter is pretty fancy schmancy, with a price to go along with it. If it were only about the filtering I would replace it with the $9 Purolator I found, since I already have a big filter on the tank. But I'm concerned about having the best flow possible, and perhaps the valve that helps to prevent dry starts?

I'd like to hear some opinions about how important the quality of that filter is and how much difference there is between cheap and expensive filters.

So you have 2 filters, one at the usual location at the tank and one other somewhere?

Mahle OC-54 is the most commonly used filter, I believe.

I can send you a Purolator if you need one right away. I have several left over from a parts trade.

Post a pic of the adapter. Probably a 993 part, that uses a 993 filter.

Buy quality filters for reasonable $ on this site. I'd spend the extra $ for a quality filter and keep crappy products away from car. Given that a rebuild is probably $8k at least, spending an extra $5 at each oil change on a quality filter seems to make sense. I try to avoid being penny-wise and pound foolish.

There's lots of difference between oil filters, running all the way from Frams at the bottom end of the spectrum to stuff like good Manns at the top. In fact for most of your FLAP store filters, they're all made by the same few companies with quality variances depending on what the client who puts his name on it is willing to pay for.

Seems odd to own a 911 and feel that the cost of an oil filter is fancy-schmancy...

WIX 51283 for around $8.50. Or NAPA Gold which is the same as WIX 51283 as Wix is NAPA's contract manufacturer. None better.

My Chevy, Jeep and Miata all get WIX filters from the local auto parts store. The 911 and 944 both get Mahle filters purchased here at Pelican.

I don't think he is concerned about the oil filter in the "usual Spot" inside the engine compartment. I believe He posted last week with pictures saying someone removed the big behr OIL COOLER that is usually mounted to the engine and replaced the cooler with a filter adapter. This is the filter that he is concerned about when he speaks of the valve to prevent back flow.

This is his post concerning the filter.
Who swiped my oil cooler?

Kshacklett , Have you hooked up another external cooler yet.

sailchef, The oil cooler that I put over the fresh air fan is the only cooler I have...if you remember the 2nd photo in the link you included. I also have "Cool Collars" on both filters. If we can believe the tests, one cool collar reduces temperature by at least 15 degrees F.

I got the motor back in the car today and I plan to have it running Fri. Hopefully I'll finally have a leak free car and I can hit the road and see if my oil cooling is adequate in the warm weather we've been having.
