Clunking Sound in Chain Tensioner?
 

After all that's happened to my car recently, I'm petrified of every noise I hear. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/frown.gif

I heard what I thought was an itermittant "clunking" sound coming from the engine, so I investigated. Using the trusty screwdriver to ear technique, I believe I've isolated it to the left side chain tensioner. My engine has the Carrera tensioner update, so could anything be out of adjustment in there?

Michael,
Might as well pull the left side cover and have a look. One or more of the ramps may be falling apart. Then, take a look at the tensioner plunger and see if it has good upward tension (try to press it down).

Sure even have not to remove the rear mount.
Just use longer screws* to hang down the rear and slide out the rear shroud.

Also check your tensioner and look if the big "washer" is on the pivot behind the housing.

Get the seals ( aluminium crush for hollow screw and chain house studs & paper gasket )

*( OK, for Beginners. Lose the left screw and remove it insert a longer screw as you will not have a M12 x1,5 on hand just use a UNF and a big washer plus nut on the underside then fix engine and do the same to the other side. Now with the two long screws you can turn down the rear by 2" witch is enough to slide out the shroud rearwards without bending it, well good trick for Waynes next book. You can even manage to drop the complete engine this way )
