Has Anyone Heard of "ARE" wheels?

Hey all,

So, on my car there is a set of 3 piece wheels that look just like the classic BBS wheels. Gold basket-weave centers, polished lips. They are really beautiful wheels, but even though my car has documentation back to 1985, i cant find any reference to the purchase of these guys... There is a small period of time, from 1997-1999 that there are no records, so im guessing that they might have been purchased then?

I think they are set at 16x7 front and 16x8 rear, though it might be 7 and 9's or, well, ya know, i just dont know, im guessing... There is one reference to a wheel lock manufacturer called H.R.S Enterprises, which is INCREDIBLY ironic to me, because the address that this place used to reside at, at minimum 17 years ago, is the exact same address that the shop i use to maintain my car is at now. I had no idea until i just went through the records and found a card with the wheel lock code on it, and noticed the address...

Anyway, if anyone has any insight, i'd love to hear it. I've tried searching the net, but looking for "ARE wheels" ends up with a ton of hits, none of which are useful... though i find out that alot of people ask: Are wheels blah blah blah? hehe...

Thanks in advance everyone...

Michael

I believe they are still around ARE is American Racing Equiptment. Sounds like they are what you said they were: Reps of BBS RS wheels. I remember seeing them for sale in European car mag back in the 90's.

BTW do you own an Ur Quattro?

Thanks for the amazingly quick response... do you have any memory as to how much they were selling for? I can't imagine that they are inexpensive, just not as expensive as true bbs's... Also, do you have a feel on the quality of these wheels? Next time i get a set of tires, i'll make sure to have the wheel weighed... that's really gonna be where the truth is told, i figure..

If I remember correctly, ARE wheels weren't very expensive. I think they were @ the price point of Enkei wheels back in the same time period. I'd guess those wheels were @ $150-$200 each brand new.

Wow, that's a hell of a deal for legitimate 3 piece forged wheels... I can see why the choice was made...

You also need to consider in that same time period, 3 piece BBS wheels were probably @ $300 each and Enkeis were @ $125 each.

Ahh, touché... i honestly wouldnt have thought that the bbs wheels were that low in cost... wow...

Its amazing how quickly time inflates the cost of certain things... hehe...

yah, that sounds about right given the apparent vintage of the wheels on my car... At least I can feel confident that they are pretty high quality wheels, if not the best of the best... Legit 3 piece, look so close to the bbs gold baskets, that gorgeous wide polished lip... they look fantastic with the gold paint of the car...

Pretty sure they are not forged. Probably cast.

Had an 84 Ur Quattro. Wonderful car.

You don't say what car these wheels are on... 85 Carrera?
