Newbie - alternator not charging!

Again probably another simple question, but the alternator is not charging on this '71 911.

How do I get at it without dismantling the car?

Many thanks

CP

Remove the left air tube, the fan belt, the fan, the screws across the top of the shroud, coil if its there, the band around the alternator.

Pull the alternator to you and there is a ground wire to unbolt from the engine case. Remove the diverter..you might mark it so you know the location to the fan housing. It is suposed to direct air to #1 and 2 cylinder.
71 has 4 wires on the back that color code to the alternator
The alternator is ready to come out of the housing. Take 2 short 2x4s and use them to support the housing as you tap the housing against the wood forcing the alternator from its seating.

Is the light glowing with the engine

1) off, ignition ON; and

2) ON, running at idle; and

3) ON, running at 2000 rpm?

I had a similar problem earlier this year that John helped me with. Thanks John. Turns out my alternator was shot so I ended up replacing it with a Rhone internally regulated alternator. Having the external voltage regulator removed makes things look a lot cleaner, improves reliability, and makes the wiring really simple.

Did you check that the transmission ground strap is in good shape. If it is damaged or corroded your alternator is not grounded. What voltage are you reading at the battery with the car running? Do the lights get brighter when you increase the RPM?

Don't forget to remove the ground cable from the battery before starting this. You don't want to do any welding while removing the alternator.

May have found problem! No ground wire on the alternator.
Where does this actually run?

John, sorry but already started to remove unit, before I checked light at 2000. I will just check it the best I can, and refit.

Kkiznli, which Rhone unit did you replace the old type with? THis car is a historic race car, and it would be alot simpler to use a unit with inbuilt regulator.

Many thnaks

Colin

Ground wire goes to any of the small throughbolts/nuts at the case centerline atop the engine. You might even find the former ground wire's lug on one of them.

Well I found the problem. The red wire that is supposed to be on the D+61 terminal was fixed to the terminal above it, directly opposite the D- terminal.
Engine has recently been rebuilt, and obviously the guy that did that, cocked up the wiring.
Also no ground strap fitted!

Put it all back together and is charging OK.
Hope there is no damage done!!

Thanks for your help everyone!!

Well it did not work!! Not charging at low rpm, and (new) battery goes flat.

Any more suggestions please?

Maybe would be better to change for a unit with higher output and inbuilt reg.
Any suggestions?

Colin
