Gearbox locked

Started my 1978 911SC and reversed out of the garage onto the street.
Selected 1st gear and let out the clutch.
No forward movement at all and car stalled.
Engaged clutch and restarted the engine and tried again - same result.
Selected 2nd , 3rd, 4th but no forward movement.
Turned off engine and selected neutral. At restart-car (clutch out) it lurched rearwards.
Aha! I'm thinking that the gearbox is locked in reverse and a forward gear (when selected) simultaneously - is this possible? What is the cause? How is it fixed?
After a lot of jiggling, it came good and has been OK for the past couple of short trips (30miles).
I'd like to prevent a recurrence and would be grateful for advice.

2 things come to mind for me......

There are detents in the trans (case) that prevent 2 gears from being engaged simultaneously. It would be really odd for this to happen if the detents are where they should be. Some are only held in by a pressure fit plug in the case and if the plug popped off, and a detent or 2 slipped out, that could be your problem.

Could be the retaining bolt on one or more internal shift fork has come loose and isn't engaging as it should anymore as well.

Whatever it is, it's not normal and might require a looksee....

Thanks Bruce Are you able to explain why the car responded as described due to the selector?
