Muffler Recommendation for a 3.2

Greetings,

I have a stock 3.2 in my 85. I recently added a Steve Wong chip, which made a very nice improvement. A few friends/members in my local PCA suggested I upgrade to SSI's and a sport muffler. At the present time, I'm not ready to make the investment for both SSI's and muffler, but I wanted to know if upgrading to a sport muffler only would make a difference. If so, what type of sport muffler should I consider?

Thanks.

I also installed a Steve Wong chip in my stock 89 Coupe... along with a Fabspeed one in two out exaust and a MK cat bypass/Euro mufler!
Great looks and the sound is very acceptable, although this system is high quality so expect to pay more than the lesser brands...
By the way,it sounds awesome at the 6750 RPM redline

I vote for an M&K. When I had my 84, it had a SW chip, test pipe and M&K muffler. Adding the M&K to the test pipe and chip added good seat of the pants hp. Probably just the sound that made the car feel faster, but every little bit helps.

From what I've read tonight about mufflers, M&K seems to be at the top of the list for many folks. But there are so many choices for my 85. 1->2, 1->1, 2->2, 2->1, what are the main differences and what will give me the most "bang for the buck" - horsepower-wise?

You will need an M+K 1inlet muffler as you still have the factory catalytic convertor or a bypass which means you have 1 inlet.

Dual outlets will be a bit louder and will require cutting your rear valance for the extra tip.

Here are the samplings of M+K that you can get right here at Pelican.

Unless you change to headers or factory heat exchangers from 69-73 you will probably not see much HP gain in just a muffler. It'll sound like you added 100 HP, though!!

I have borla for turbo, modified to fit my non-turbo. I love the sound, best sounding I've ever had.

Having just gone through this...
Buy a fabspeed or M&K cat bypass and a single outlet sport muffler. There are more cost effective improvements for 3.2s than SSIs. I believe Steve Wong's data supports this.

SSIs: $1150
Sport muffler (M&K, Monty, Dansk): $650-1000
Oil lines: $225
Hardware: $50

A carefully spent $2,000 could get you some very nice suspension upgrades.

M&K is a very popular choice and great customer care.

If you want a muffer that looks more stock you might look in to the Dansk sport muffler.

As to HP, adding a sport muffler on top of a cat bypass is maybe another 3-5hp if I recall. I prefer not to stand out in town anymore than necessary when I get on it so I have stayed with the stock muffler with a chip and cat bypass. The stock muffler is a pretty good and effecent muffler.
