I may need to remove the strut from the lower ball joint in order to install my new shock inserts. The Bentley manual says to always replace the threaded pin that connects the strut to the ball joint.
Anyone know why it would be a requirement to replace this pin every time it is removed? Thanks, Don 87 coupe |

You should not have to remove this pin to replace the inserts. Just swing the top of the strut past the fender well. 81'SC

They tell you to replace it because you often will crush/distort the threads when driving this tapered pin out (even when you use a small diameter punch). Even if you don't distort it...you may weaken it by pounding on it...just a guess. You'd think they would just use some heat treated (or some type of stronger) material so it could be reusable.
I learned this one the hard way! Nick. ------------------ _ _ __ _ _ Nick Shumaker 1982 911SC Coupe nickshu@yahoo.com PCA -- Rocky Mtn. Region |

when you lift the car and swing the strut out of the wheel well, remove the brake line horseshoe clip where the metal and rubber lines meet in the wheelwell, so you don't stretch the rubber hose.

Hello
There are two different designs around. The erly have a round cutout and a normal screw to fix them. The strut has a slit and will be clamped by the bolt. The later version has a V shaped cutout and use the wedged stud. Replacing for saefty reasons. The wedge style is made fom high carbon steel with will not stretch as a bolt and if you bend the stud it can fail. Well a failure on that part is very risky. But under normal circumstances and with a soft removal the risk is very low. Grüsse |
