What should I expect to pay for '86 Sport Seats?
I found a pair of power sport seats for an '86 Carrera that I'm thinking about purchasing, if I close the deal on the car I've been looking at. The seats are linen color, so I'd need to either have them recovered or dyed to match the tan color of the car's interior. Can anyone tell me what the going rate is for seats like this? The leather appears to be in excellent condition with no rips or tears.

$600 to $1000 would be an average price range.

I'd go on the low end of John's range. Power seats are heavier, thus in lower demand - due to the folks setting up their car for track purposes.

I have a pair of 74-79 Sport Seats in my 87 Carrera. They are considerably lighter than the OEM power seats. The look, feel, and function of the mid year Sport Seats are a home run IMO. I would not trade them for anything.
I did have to alter the seatbelt pickup spot due to my 87 G50 center tunnel. Mike |

I changed my mind about re-coloring the sport seats I bought, as it was a lot of work to do "properly" (your definition may vary) and I wasn't confident I'd get the results I wanted. Added to which they seemed too good once cleaned up, and I sold 'em instead.
So I bought another set of cores, and had those professionally re-covered. Out of interest, I asked the upholstery guy if he would have re-colored the others. He referred to it as "painting", and said he much prefers not to do it. What I don't quite understand is why folks aren't prepared to pay nearly as much for a set of used sport seats as it costs for a good quality set of replacement covers for them - before you factor in the 4 hours labor (either yours or someone else's) to fit them. Guess there must be a lot of serviceable used ones at cheaper prices - I just got bored trying to find them in my color...

I'd suggest waiting until you find a set in the color you want. I tend to think that a good pair of seats can be sold for the thick end of $1,000 and changing the color or (properly) recovering them will add a bunch to that. Changing the color is cheaper than recovering but to do either one correctly is a bit of work.
I'd post a WTB ad for whatever color you are looking for and see what pops up. There are three generations of the sport seats and, while the last version is correct for what car you're looking to buy, you might want to sit in some of the others to see which you like the best. There are pros and cons to each. JR |
