Another "should I buy this car?"
I have the hots for a 72 or 73-I would like to do an RS replica and after looking all over N.America I found this 'down the road'. It is a 73 911T serial number 9113103** fitted with a 75 911S CIS engine. The engine sounds good, goes well and has updated tensioners and turbo valve covers. It leaks a little but not bad. The owner tells me the compressions are down around 135. It pulls quite well, not as well as my SC but is revier. The transmission feels pretty good-actually better than my SC. Since I want to build a RS I expected to rebuild an engine and fit Webers or MFI so the engine is a good core.
The body is remarkably rust free, but, it has been modified to impact bumper style and it has been fully converted: Even the bumper shock absorbers are installed and the front fenders appear to be the later style-not cut down originals. The sill finishers from a impact bumper car are installed. The paint is so-so. It is an attractive color but I suppose that is irrelevant. Interior is very good with brand new Sparco Monza seats. The asking price is just under $10K. Does this car make sense as a purchase? ![]()

It really doesn't make any sense to me as all you are getting that is different from your SC, body wise, is an early dash and chrome trim. Would make more sense to backdate your SC.

I am not interested in just the 'look', I want the real RS experience and I don't think I would get that by tarting up my SC. Additionally, I am sure there will be more value in the future in a properly converted '73 than in a later car backdated. IMHO.

I'd start with a '73 that still looks like a '73.

If you're looking at 73's for future value, get one that is all original. If you want the RS experience, you won't get that with CIS. Needs to be MFI to do that. Bear in mind, the 'T's were abundant and on the lagging edge of collectible. Not saying they aren't important, just that the E and S will always be ahead in value.
Drive a LOT of cars before deciding! Can't say that enough. Strip away emotion (if possible ![]()

With that said you will never recover your investment in a properly converted 73 that will give you the real RS experience. Do not kid yourself, the most important part of the "properly" is the magnificant 200hp 2.7 MFI motor. It will take quite a few dollars to convert a CIS to an RS MFI 2.7. On the other hand there are at least two very nice RS clones currently for sale. They would be a great way to get a car taking advantage of another's non-recoverable investment. Here is mine in one of its prior forms. I will never recover my full investment. ![]()

Thanks for the input guys. I realise an E or an S would be more valuable but surely that is the point-I am going to be changing it anyway? So why pay a premium price now?
What is the best method of converting the later style front fenders to early style? Does somebody make a filler piece? I realise as I think of it now that this car has had the front panel replaced-hence the impact bumper shocks correctly mounted and the hood latch panel does not show signs of having been moved. Hmmm.

For my money (which of course it isn't), the most important element to consider is the condition of the tub. A good, straight, solid shell puts you way ahead. If this car has that it's a good basis for your project, if not, look elswhere.
