Single stage urethane

I had a friend paint my car with single stage urethane last year and shorly after i got a blob of bird crap on the engine lid near the porsche letters. itlooks like someone tried to rub it off with a fingernail too. thanks whoever you are! the result is a light spot about an inch and a half on the paint. does anyone know what i can use to blend in the spot with the rest of the paint without hurting the paint. polich? compound? glaze? cleaner wax? i have never had single stage urethane before .

It will depend on the color. If it is non-metallic simply start with a polishing compound. If the scratches are deep then wetsand and then switch to a cutting and finally polishing compound.

single stage paints are very forgiving to fix problems.

If it is a metallic color you can not do much except a light polish. Any more will disturb the metallic distribution in the paint and make it appear worse than when you started.

polish it out, starting with a very light polish and moving up in aggressiveness as necessary.

Pardon my ignorance, really, but what is "single-stage urethane"? I use on my 911 a Glasurit yellow paint that gets mixed with a moderate amount of hardener and a tiny amount of reducer, then sprayed. Is that a single-stage urethane?

I think when people say "single stage" they are talking about a non-clear coat finish system. I.e., the color coat is the final coat, rather than color followed by clear.

All automotive paints have hardners/catalysts etc. added to them before spraying.

Okay, that's me, then. No clearcoat, and I color-sand the finish. Thanks!

Single stage refers to the layers of paint. A single stage is only a colored layer. A multi-stage (usually 2-stage) is a very thin color layer followed by a much thicker clear layer. This is often called Base/clear. There can be multiple base layers depending on the color and visual effects.

Urethane refers to the specific chemistry of the resins that make up the paint. The resins are tinted for color. Common chemistry formulations included lacquer, acrylic, enamel and urethane, not to mention combinations thereof (like acrylic urethane or acrylic enamel).

I have had great luck using 3M scratch remover in the oblong black bottle. Applied with a microfiber towel and a little elbow grease it has been excellent in removing bird crap marks and other problem scratches associated with my black car.

Also is great for detailing all the little corners with a q-tip around the bellows and valances that get that wax/crud build up. With a little wax afterwards it makes the paint look like new. Seems to cut just enough to remove scratches and oxidation but doesnt induce bad swirls.

From my experience birds seem to love Porsche's as much as we do!

IF you don't have metallic paint. As per jpnovak. Colour sanding a metallic finish will really bugger it up.

Metallic finish? No cheesy bling here, just Yellowbird Yellow.
