Windshield Glare
Any solutions to instrument glare on windshield at night?Tach and speedo throw a 1/4 cirlce glare onto windshield. It is bearable but I'm in a "fix the little problems" mode. It is a 1985 Carrera. Just installed Maxhp chip ( 91 octane), started it but have not drove it. Finishing off soundproofing so will probably be on the road tomorrow. Thanks for any help!

that sounds kind of odd given the overhang of the dash over the gauge cluster, i would think that it would be well shielded from the windshield glare.
On another note, I would be very interested in hearing your feedback on the MaxHP chip. I have one ordered. There has been a substantial debate vs. the Steve Wong Chip...........various opinions. Nothing negative about both really, but they seem to perform differently. I'd be interested to hear your take on it.

Yes It's Odd
I originally thought the glare was coming from the area where the dash has shrunk sightly away from the defrost vent but I did the dark garage, lights on and traced it to the instruments. I have made some temporary hoods and taped them to the top of the instruments. We'll see tonight. Chasing parts now but should be running this afternoon.--I've always noticed a flat spot at low RPM, kinda reminds me of having to keep a 2-cycle up on the pipe to get good acceleration. Hopefully RB's chip will make it better. I spend a lot more time in the 1500 - 5000 RPM than pushing the line. Will advise.

That's where I am as well, and from my research the RB chip seemed more appropriate. Look forward to your findings.

jhnmso,
First - VERY nice looking car. And I like your choice of scenery - it really compliments the colors of the car. Second - What exhaust are you running? The curvature of the outlet pipe look 'aftermarket Dansk'. Third - No, sorry, I don't have a good answer for the glare problem. In fact, I have a similar problem with my '87. In my case it's not the instruments that cause the glare, but I get a prominent reflection in the windshield from the red illumination light of the central door lock switch - worse, of course, when the locks are activated due to the increased lamp brightness. It is quite agrivating when driving down a dark road to see this red light in the middle of my windshield. I too fashioned a temporary hood over the offending light, but I am interested in a better solution (other than removing the indicator lamp, of course). |

Okay, first things first. The dash is warped up. If I put my finger against the lip of the dash it goes away. Looked at maybe clamping something to straighten it out but........
I have been busy this week, installed new Wevo shift coupler and shifter bushing. Shifting seems....more solid. Not as much searching or pressuring to get it in gear. Did just touch reverse when downshifting from 5 to 4, maybe a slight more adjustment. Installed new turn signal/light stalk. Brights were coming on when self- cancel turned off flicker. This solved a aggravating problem. Since I'm am old I had to take both seats out to replace shift coupler. My car is a sports car not a luxury sports car. But there are times when I want to turn the tunes on and cruise. Unfortunately with the Dansk muffler and very little soundproofing that was really not possible. So both seats out, shifter console out and auto heater housing out I decided to spend the $ ($300.00) and soundproof. A lot of work but well worth it. Now to the MaxHp chip I also installed. First thing I notice is a lot smoother idle, not so much roughness or backfires. Next it seems to be a lot more even thru the power band. I live 7-8 miles from freeway on-ramp on a nice curvy road. Took it fairly easy going down, hit the freeway on-ramp hard and it pulled strong to 6 grand. Coming home took the twistys a bit harder and likedthe way it went. Not many miles yet but if it isn't rainy tomorrow will probably get a hundred or so of mixed roads. Will advise if impressions tomorrow are different

I've never seem gauge lights reflect on the windshield. Can't imagine Porsche allowing that to happen.
I vote for a warped dash problem. |
