Do the oil lines to the oil tank effect oil pressure?
Trying to give an older 911 some TLC
.The oil lines from/to the oil tank are somewhat compressed the way they are installed. Lumen seems about 30% of normal... Would this effect the oil pressure, or no? Car runs fine, and I don't want to start disconnecting things yet, if I don't have to. Oil presurre seems to max out at 4 Druck... Plan is to take the motor out for the winter and replace any perishables... We always hear about the various causes of low oil pressure (sender, guage, bearing wear, etc), but I never see anything about the oil tank effecting pressure... Does it? No, they are in the scavenge circuit. The pressure gauge is in the pressure circuit.

Thats what I thought... but some follow up questions...
There was a thread on here where a poster had low oil pressure due to an oil filter malfunction, and another who had an "air lock" in the oil filter, which then when fixed altered the oil pressure.... Another said that when his oil level read low on the dipstick, oil pressure was low... Wouldn't effecting the supply side of the equation, effect the rest of the system? If you completely clamped both oil lines to the oil tank, you would lose oil pressure, right? I know the circuits seem to run in parallel, but don't they have to effect each other? |

affecting the supply side of the equation, will not affect the rest of the system on the pressurized side b/c the sump tank works as a reservoir
if the oil volume rel. to flow rate was really really low then I guess there could be an effect, but you'd see a lot of cavitation first |

What you have discovered is that there is a lot of mis-information on this forum. The scavenge circuit will have no effect on the pressure circuit until the tank runs dry. Once the tank runs dry the pressure circuit will go to zero.

if his supply line to the motor is crushed, could that restrict the flow TO the pump?
as far as oil filters causing problems, they can malfunction. there is a back flow valve and a bypass valve. here is a good site about filters. i wish he would look at the mann and, i cant think of the other brand that is popular for porsches. http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/index.html

Thanks for the input guys...
I will straighten out the line either way... I do have another question on oil pressure that has me puzzled... will post seperate thread.... |
