just installed alternator and question:
82 SC
R&Rd the alternator, and everything is working great; however, I'm not 100% convinced the alternator is deep enough towards the engine or beneath the 'shroud'. If I place it under the shroud (note the screws were not doing anything before removal which I found odd), once I tighten the fan strap via allen wrench, it moves the whole assembly towards the rear of the car. It is tight and working, just doesn't seem right. Am I missing anything? thanks |
Not sure there is a wrong way to do this. The fan is attached to the fan housing which is place on top of a pin to align properly and then the strap holds it all in place. If you have it on the pin, it is properly aligned and spaced. The shroud screw are just to seal the shroud to the fan housing.

thanks Kurt
So next question: newly rebuilt alternator. At first, puts out 14 to 14.5, perfect. After about 10 minutes, voltage shoots up to 16.5 or even 17. Then, a few minutes later, back to 14. I know this usually indicates voltage regulator isnt working right, but anything else to check before sending it back? thanks in advance |
All I can think of is a bad voltage regulator.

That VR is on the back of the alternator. You should be running the smaller Paris-Rhone, the larger P-R is used on the Carrera and uses a deeper fan shroud.

yeah, I may take the regulator off the old alternator and try it on the rebuilt one.
