Fan hub damage. Can this be repaired?
Final stage of a 10 months restoration. When reinstalling the belt I replaced the shims asI found them in the first place. None inner half, 3 outer half. Rattling noise with the belt on (10x710 Conti). I realize that I need 6 shims in total. Will also replace the outer pulley.
The damage to the hub is like the damage on this picture from Grady Clay (tx). Question is if I can still have it welded/repaired in any way?

Yes, repair
TIG or MIG weld it to fill the void. It's steel. Dress the weld back to it's original shape with a fine file. That weld will be heat treated and stronger than the original surface. Verify a snug fit to the outer pulley half and coat it with diluted POR15.
Everyone should verify their pulley is seated and tight. This pulley half was just loose enough to beat itself up with every on-power/off-power rev change. hth. Bob |

You could even JB-weld it. *IF* you tighten the pulley nut properly with all the spacers, the shaft flats carry no load, as the outer half is properly clamped to the shaft / hub. It just serves to center the outer pulley half and to keep the shaft from rotating as you start to tighten the nut.
