G-50 Shifter reinstall question

I got the shifter assembly out of the car and replaced all the bushings, but now can't figure out how to get the assembly back in and connected to the shift rod in the tunnel.

I can't get the shifter housing to slide far enough forward, nor slide the shift rod back far enough to get the shifter rod into the bushing on the housing.

I got it out without disconnecting the shift rod from the coupler under the floor in the rear seating area so I would think "reinstallation is the reverse of disassembly".

Any tips or tricks? Car is an early 1987.

I just did this a couple of months ago. The memory ain't what it used to be, but I think you just have push the shift rod back and then lift it a little and insert it before you put the shifter assembly into the tunnel completely...I think...

Also make sure the notch in the bushing is facing down! (I think that might be the trick you are looking for)

Good Luck

I got, thanks. Trick was to hold the housing at a steep angle and use a string to pull the shift rod up into the bushing.
