Mystery hole in left front fenderwell?

While replacing the left front fender on my '83 SC,I noticed that there's a big round hole, 2 5/8" in diameter, with a matching hole on the trunk sheetmetal, that leads through to the trunk area. The hole is near the rear of the left front fenderwell, up near the fender-to-body area.

What's it for? Must have been something there that I stripped out when rebuilding the car, either electrical or some kind of hose...

What can I use to plug those two holes, which I currently have taped over? I'll look for some kind of large plug or blank-off cover at Lowe's, on the off chance that one of the right size exists, but is there a Porsche part that goes there, or did it just have a big rubber bushing in it?

Isn't that where the gas filler neck goes?

Duh! I've had the old fender off for a week now and have been puttering around getting stuff ready to install the new one, and forgot that yes, there's a gas filler neck involved...

Sorry to bother you with this stupidity. I'll try to remove the thread as soon as you get this answer.

Another question would be, Why is there another hole located on the other side of the trunk going thru the tub in the exact same location and the exact same size, just on the other side ? Is this for Japanese models that would have the fuel filler on the right side? Take a look, you'll see what I'm talking about.
