Valve Cover Gaskets
Hello -
Is it absolutely necessary to replace the valve cover gaskets and hardware if the covers are on a brand new engine rebuild with less that 10 miles on the engine? I did my initial start up over the weekend for 20 minutes, then oil change. Everything went well , and as expected. Then I started it again, set the timing, and drove around my neighborhood for about 5 miles. Everything felt fine, and after a another hour or so I drove it another 5 miles when I started hearing very load noises coming from the driver side exhaust valve train. During both drives I never exceeded 4K RPM and I was varying the RPM range as often as possible. I'd like to take the covers off and look around. If I do this should I replace the gasket and hardware or can I bolt it back up as is? Thanks in advance for your help. |

Just open it up and if you dont destroy the gasket, you won
As for the nuts and bolts, theyre still new. Bruce |

Try it. If they leak, you know the fix
It's probably the bottom ones that will give you trouble. I've had the same uppers for a long time... years and years and years. I replaced the bottoms a month back and it fixed a pesky oil leak.
